  • Sacco and Vanzetti [Kino Blu-ray] audio censorship

Just picked up the 'Sacco and Vanzetti' Kino blu-ray, very annoying that it includes the partially censored dub which includes another voice actor mid sentence to remove political content including the word 'anarchist' with 'radical' and soften political speeches towards the end. Sadly it appears to contain dub-titles too!

You'll find an example of the voice actor replaced mid-sentence at 1hr54.20sec But there's plenty more.....reminds me of 'The Rutles' Ed Sullivan clip', not really what you want from a serious political drama!

The old VCI dvd included the correct dub. No excuse really because i did warn them to look out for this on Facebook, some of the changes noted below.

    ********SPOILERS*******

From 1hr51 on the VCI version International dub [1hr 52.22 on the Kino and Italian blu-ray], voice looping changes mid-sentence on the Kino and Italian blu noted by brackets either side of changed dialogue:

Governor Fuller [Edward Jewesbury] "So you are the famous Bartolomeo Vanzetti"
Bartolomeo Vanzetti [Gian Maria Volontè] "I have never had any intention to become famous"
Frederick Katzmann [Cyril Cusack] off-screen "But you are now"
Governor Fuller [Edward Jewesbury] "You sent me a petition, not a plea to be pardoned a petition for clemency and asking for me to intervene. Do you regret that?"
    Vanzetti "No
Governor Fuller "This May seem strange to you Mr Vanzetti, I have come here to ask your advice. What would you do in my place?"
Vanzetti "But you are in charge"
Governor Fuller "Let's see now Mr Vanzetti, you are an anarchist [radical] i am a Conservative, in fact i am the Governor of one of the most Conservative of the United States, what leads you to believe i can show clemency towards you"
Vanzetti "I comprehend what you want me to say but even i an anarchist [radical] can still trust in bourgeois power"
Governor Fuller "We would like to understand your idea of how power works in what you call the bourgeoisie"
Vanzetti "Senor Fuller i have the impression that you blame me for asking clemency"
Katzmann "Do you believe you are dealing with a system of power that goes from President Coolidge to Judge Thayer, the Governor of Massachusetts until the last guard in this prison, what makes you think this network, this system is so weak and incoherent at one point that's what the Governor is saying, who isn't the smallest link in the chain, so weak that it could be clement with an anarchist, a sworn enemy of the system" [so weak it could be clement with a radical a sworn enemy of the state]
Vanzetti "Then you are saying that we are being convicted for being anarchists and not for robbery and assassination" [Then you are saying that we are being condemned for being radicals and not for robbery and assassination]
Governor Fuller "Let's assume you are not an anarchist, a radical or anything of the kind and you are accused of murder and robbery [Let's assume you aren't a socialist, radical or anything of the kind], do you think there would be such an outcry then from all over the world then? Surely not Mr Vanzetti, you're not petitioning the authorities as an ordinary innocent citizen but as an anarchist [but as a radical] with a movement created around you. Do you think an act of clemency would change that movements opinions of power, or would it merely be considered weakness"
Vanzetti "But i had wished to speak of this justice Senor Fuller"
Katzmann "But isn't justice part of the power system? Would you in this situation as a man in power grant a pardon?"
Vanzetti "I only ask you for an act of justice, but you both come here to explain to me again that your system is based on force and violence
Katzmann "You Vanzetti, an anarchist speak to us of violence" [You Vanzetti, a radical speak to us of violence]
Vanzetti "Why after seven years must i hear all that, you said it at my trial and i say that your society which we are forced to live in and which we want to do away with, was always constructed on violence, to have to beg for ones bread is violence, the misery and famine which millions all over the world live in isn't that violence, war is violence...and money, even the fear of death we have each one of us, is violence. It is for this i speak of violence, and you Senor Fuller why don't you tell me plain and simple, Bartolomeo Vanzetti your petition clemency is denied"
    And that's just one scene!!!

    VCI International dub:
    Italian Blu:
    Bartolomeo Vanzetti [Gian Maria Volontè]
    Govenor Fuller [Edward Jewesbury]
    Frederick Katzmann [Cyril Cusack]

The weird thing watching this is they haven't removed every use of the word 'Anarchist', i've checked against the VCI dvd and i noticed the first change around 44mins 'radical' on the Kino/Italian blu 'anarchist' on the VCI, I think the botched audio stems from when they did the restoration in Italy they seem to have used two English tracks the uncensored for the first 40 minutes then the censored for the remainder, a real shame as the main actors appear to be delivering their lines in English.

    More changes 1hr 5m.05

Vanzetti [Volonte] "I only believe in socialism" Kino "I only believe in anarchy" VCI.
Katzmann [Cyril Cusask] "And what kind of socialism do you believe in Mr Vanzetti, would you care to explain to us" [voiced by someone with a completely different voice to Cusack] Kino/Italian blu
"And what kind of anarchy do you believe in Mr Vanzetti, would you care to explain to us" [Cusacks voice VCI dvd].

What a mess, the commentary is mostly dead air which is a shame as Alex Cox is very insightful when he does contribute.

That is odd. What would be the point of the change? Yet someone put effort into it.
