I think it arrived at Dtm on Friday so I suspect being the weekend has held things up slightly for shipping. Its the same for me too,

    • I've been using my secret German superpower to try and read impressions on Dirty Pictures, and it seems users there are more than pleased with the presentation. This is one of the ultimate Holy Grails of genre cinema for me, and I can't believe it's finally out on legit bluray! Users on the German forum say it's like seeing the film for the first time compared to the various VHS rips we've had to deal with so far. I hope this release can get people to re-evaluate this superbly grimy giallo, which in my opinion has had quite an underrated position i giallo canon.

        • A couple of caps from lovelockandload via FB, if Walter commissioned a new scan for CR, that's good enough for me to wait.

Landi's direction is so often criticized but it is quite competent and professional and not mechanical. It feels as though he is connected to the material and he seems perfectly capable of working well with actors and eliciting substantive and convincing performances from his cast here. The more clinical, "neo-realist" style fits the material. In my view, a very dark, morbid, and complex psychological narrative such as we have embodied within the GIALLO A VENEZIA script would not work well with a very self-conscious and gimmicky Argento or Martino style at all and would actually detract from the best qualities this film's narrative possesses. The script itself, I feel, is truly excellent. The characterizations and how they are integral to the overarching themes in the film are far more complex than they are often given credit to be. The Fabio/Flavia relationship is truly disquieting and unnerving and the actors acquit themselves extraordinarily well, particularly Leonora Fani. That hottie could actually act and she was more than capable of an impressive performance, just watch her in PENSIONE PAURA, for example. Her role in GIALLO A VENEZIA is also a very difficult one to pull off. Compare the particulars of her characterization and the extent of her degradation throughout and note how she interprets it all and expresses it and try to seek out a comparable characterization and performance in some Hollywood garbage that does not go way overboard with pretentious overacting and concurrently take far fewer ultimate risks than Fani takes here. The whole dynamic of the newlywed couple's relationship is harrowing and depressive and is fascinating to 'dissect' and 'explore'. The 'love' obsessed "philosophy student" (gotta love that nuance!) serial murderer characterization is also impressive and I thoroughly enjoy how the actor translates his euphoric sadism such as when, despite panic and a gunshot injury, he must allow himself to still pause in hesitation to watch his victim burn alive. I also adore that he does what he does so effectively despite his eyes being obscured through mirrored sunglasses, too.

Wonderful that this transgressive masterpiece is finally being restored!
I love this assessment. Well done. I really need to see this flick with subs.
Why would anybody watch a scum show like Videodrome? Why did you watch it, Max?

                  • Those screens, to be honest, hardly even look HD. And look at all the artifacts in the sky and water on pic no. 1. Well, still it'll be a large step up from VHS quality. Might have to double dip if the CR is indeed much better, though.

Is the source material supposed to be a negative or a film print? This almost looks like source could be a film print. I am skeptical that the CR release can really improve on this all that much unless source materials are different? Perhaps some minor cosmetic alterations could be perpetrated at best. Lest we not forget, many past CR releases also look 'not so good'.

                        • If I recall correctly this is supposed to be from a print, but CR have stated their Italian releases are new OCN scans. So no idea, maybe they're not even from the same source, although I find that hard to believe.

Hah! As do I! Just a mere coincidence that both releases of same film are so proximal to each other but source materials are, of course, still distinct. I also am skeptical of that, seems more like a way to separate something rhetorically for marketing purpose to me. CR are also known to, shall we say, possibly stretch truths and do some selective 'fabrication' from time to time, too. I guess we'll see. Judging from those stills, maybe it is unfair to be too hard on the German release. After all, did we ever even imagine we'd see this film get released at all?! I am shocked it's been issued as such in the first place. Has CR stated specifically that their issue of GIALLO A VENEZIA is from an OCN?

I would also tend to think, if a camera negative were available for this film, it would have been issued long before now, on dvd for example, when all those other Crisanti titles were being released. Though it is 'possible' that something could 'suddenly' turn up, but usually it is more likely a film print that surfaces from obscurity rather than a camera negative and I have never personally heard about any rights issues with this title wherein access to an OCN did exist as a possibility but was 'cost' or 'legality' problematic?

Kinda surprised that your getting to consistently slander Code Red without opposition. Really shouldn't be allowed on a civilized forum like RSP.

                              • Hey Jason, apparently you are the opposition, so why don't you actually respond with something other than whining? These companies are not sports teams, they are capitalist businesses. Code Red are perhaps the most customer unfriendly label out there, and have brought the critisism and "slander" upon themselves. If you want a thread for CR "supporters" and sycophants, there is already such a place on another, larger forum.
