Patrick Still Lives is great. It doesn't get much notice among the Euro-Cult fans but it's a fun trash flick. The first hour is a softcore Euro porn with amazing looking ladies. The 3rd act is a trashy horror flick with a standout impalement via poker scene and one other bit of decent gore.

Patrick Still Lives is a guilty pleasure of mine. As for Giallo in Venice, the BBFC are still very strict on sexual violence, I'm hoping it gets through uncut, but I have my doubts. Still, it's likely that this will get picked up in the US or Germany now there's an HD master and the owners are doing business (there must be some reason that it never came out on DVD as it's so well known amongst Eurocult fans).

The most common theory regarding the movie not coming out on DVD is that the rights holder wanted an insane amount of money for it and/or wanted to package it with multiple shit films that have no audience. I know that's what happened when Media Blasters tried to get it and got the rights to Patrick Still Lives instead because that's how they rolled.

So I'm guessing either the original rights holder said "Fuck it" And wanted to get some money out of it. Or the guy died and whoever was next in line was more sensible about licensing.

As one comment asks, what about the BBFC?

I'd be surprised if the BBFC got their scissors out for this film; they only seem to cut R18s these days or anything that contains material which might be legally dubious.

There is a scene where a hooker is stabbed in the cunt. That might give them some trouble.

Depends how explicit it is, if it is a close up and you actually see he knife cut into it then yes maybe itll be a problem the same way the nipple slicing scene in New York Ripper was. But that film also had a non-explicit shot of a lady being stabbed between the legs but that didn't get cut (I don't think..)

It's very clear the killer is stabbing the prostitute in the cunt. But the picture quality was muddy, so maybe it's more graphic remastered? I don't know. What I do know is that it's not as bad as the cunt mutilation seen in The Killer Is Still Among Us.

I think it'd pass. The word on the street is that the only reason NEW YORK RIPPER was cut was because it had been successfully prosecuted as obscene in the past, and thus token cuts had to be made. Plus, even that was almost five years ago. GIALLO A VENEZIA has no such legacy in this country.

I think I have the film on dvd-r but the quality is so bad that I didn't make it through it.

A little off-topic but what happens if a UK company releases a film that they did not submit to the BBFC?

You wouldn't get it into stores. It's a legal requirement in over protective countries like the UK and Australia. They charge good money to rate the films and then charge good money again to rate all your extras as well. It's kind of a compulsory tax on filmmakers and distributors.

Would be illegal. Though it would be funny to see if they would even notice if you just slapped an "18" label on the cover.

There have been some instances where the big studios have got away with something similar - eg, Warner's 'accidental' uncut releases of NICO/ABOVE THE LAW and TANGO AND CASH.

Come to think of it, as I recall Warner's achieved something similar during the mid-1990s, releasing Abel Ferrara's Ms 45/ANGEL OF VENGEANCE uncut under their 'Maverick Directors' VHS label - and that wasn't BBFC certified.

There was a brief period a few years ago where someone discovered that the UK Video Recordings Act wasn't legal on a technicality, but no-one (that I know of) took advantage of this for the few months that it took to fix. I suspect that the compulsory certification requirement is the reason that Warners and Sony barely release any catalogue stuff wheras their European branches do. The BBFC are just a load of obsolete tossers trying to justify their meaningless existence in the Internet age (a bit like those charities that just exist to keep their executives in a job and piss away most of the donations on admin).
