  • Yes, of the two I prefer KILL THEM ALL..., but I like REASON... a heck of a lot too. Both are quite sombre, serious Westerns.

I heard BU were releasing THE GRAND DUEL, but I thought it was DVD only. If BU release it with some good extras, I may buy yet another copy of the movie. On the other hand, I'd love to see BU give some of the other Italian Westerns they release on DVD new go-rounds via the Blu format - TEXAS ADDIO and MANNAJA would be top of my list.

Horace, don't know if you're aware of it or not but on the uncut version of REASON (that Wild East released) Coburn is dubbed. MGM recently released a dvd-r of it through Amazon, the cut US version with Coburn's voice but it's missing about 20 minutes. Just warning you - that Swedish dvd is probably the uncut European version with the dub.

I know. I hate losing Coburn's distinctive voice but 20 minutes is a lot to lose.

If I really like the movie I may plump for the Amazon version to get his voice though.

            No Blu Ray for DUEL?

What's the point of this? The 5 buck Mill Creek set actually looks pretty good. So we are supposed to plunk down for a non-HD presentation for some extras?

If Lustig wants to get taken seriously again in the reissue game this kind of boneheaded move isn't going to help.

I thought I was the only one who dug TEXAS ADDIO, most seem down on it because it's more 'traditional' than the other BU SWs but I liked it quite a bit.

              • All right - THE GREAT SILENCE came in from Japan yesterday and the image, while ahead of the DVD, isn't a massive upgrade. The Blu is 1080i and while some closeups look quite good, other shots are pretty lackluster. I'm going to hand this one off to Herr Jane soon so he can do proper screencaps for this baby. maybe even an A/B thing with caps from the DVD?

In further outrageous overspending news - I also picked up the DAY OF ANGER Japanese Blu. Once again its in 1080i but I have not had a chance to watch it yet (its due for delivery today). This one was a little easier to justify since Wild East's old DVD goes for over 100 bucks these days and its not even anamorphic! Hopefully Ian can screencap this one too.

                  • Anyone care to comment on the new line from Koch Germany you've been buying from Diabolik? Picture quality and all that?

I've only watched SHOOT THE LIVING AND PRAY FOR THE DEAD so far, it looks very nice. This one corrects the aspect ratio error of the earlier Koch disc and is a new master as well. The film grew on me some, wasn't all that impressed the last time I saw it but I did enjoy it more although it's still no favorite of mine. Two great vocal tunes in the soundtrack though, "Who Is That Man" and "I'm Not Your Pony". Kinski is pretty great in the film but the lead is bland imo.

I hope to get to SUGAR COLT this weekend. I got my copies from Amazon.de btw. I think Diabolik is sold out of most of these right now.

Both claim to have english subs. I'd be interested in what DJANGO THE BASTARD looks like, may have to take a gamble on that soon.

How was the transfer on the Grand Duel/Keorma double feature blu that was going for dirt cheap?

                            • You know, I actually forgot I have that.

Very good. Looking at it now. Widescreen, anamorphic, 93 minutes 48 seconds, clear and reasonably sharp. It's not a restoration or anything, but it's the best I've seen although a long ways from definitive.

Blue Underground generally does an excellent job.

                              One might even say excellent.

                              • I'm torn on GRAND DUEL since BU is not releasing a BD...I have the Mill Creek which looks nice but I like to support any company that releases sw in fine fashion. I'll probably end up getting this, the film is good enough to merit another trip to the well.
