  • THE BEYOND (Lucio Fulci, 1981): Shameless Screen Entertainment's new Blu-ray release

I'm massively drunk (having polished off the last of a lovely bottle of Laphroaig 10y.o.) but I'm currently watching the new Shameless Screen Entertainment's Blu-ray release of THE BEYOND projected onto a 100 inch screen in my living room. I was skeptical about this release, given Shameless' track record with HD formats, but to my admittedly tipsy eyes, this seems to be a major improvement on the Arrow Video Blu-ray release of (how long?) back. (For the record, I rewatched the Arrow release a few months ago.)

Oh, how I love this film....

Haha, classic Paul. Your drunk posts are more articulate than most sober people's.
Why would anybody watch a scum show like Videodrome? Why did you watch it, Max?

Happy to hear it looks good, but there are some reports on the Blu-ray.com forum that there are some audio issues not found on other releases. In the same thread at Blu-ray.com, the good Dr. hinted at another release from someone in 2020, so I figure I'll stick to my Grindhouse Releasing Blu-ray until that release happens.

I've not looked at Blu-ray.com. (My blood pressure won't permit it.) However, I can assert that the audio is (or seems to be) stereo rather than mono. It's a little uneven in places, some scenes sounding a little 'thin' and others being more punchy in terms of sound.

I too watched it the other night. My impressions were that visually it does look better than any previous releases. However, the audio in the first few minutes seems very tinny, almost like it was recorded in an empty hall. But then at some point becomes quite robust. Not sure what's going on there. I cant even pinpoint when the change happens. Thankfully it doesnt spoil the enjoyment. Not too impressed with that exclusive see through packaging though. Bit disappointed really.

It's Fulci's horror masterpiece. The movie that got me into surrealism, Herzog, Jodorowsky, Lynch, philosophy, all this shit. It's the most important film in my life because it changed the course massively so.

Haha. I can't keep from poking myself in the eye.
