I'm genuinely surprised by the animosity towards THRILLER here. I had always been under the impression it was seen by most as a solid exploitation classic but I guess I was wrong. I wonder if Tarantino may have spoiled it some for people back around the time he was making KILL BILL because I know he hyped the film heavily then (I remember he said that the only way to view it was on a fifth generation VHS tape, which is horse shit. I had a shitty tape version for a while before the Synapse disc came out and it's no contest). His endorsement can often be the kiss of death for cult film fans. Seeing his face on those DETROIT 9000 and MIGHTY PEKING MAN tapes used to frustrate me to no end so I get that if it is indeed the case.

Anyway, I haven't seen THRILLER in at least 15 years but the viewing I had back then was transcendent. Granted I was real fucking high on Vicodin and about 6 PBR's but that was standard operating procedure for me then and I put a chair right in front of the TV and plugged in my AKG K240 headphones and became absolutely absorbed.

If this does ever get rereleased I'll skip the booze and opioids but maybe get some hybrid edibles and try to replicate my earlier experience. I'd hate to end up in the same boat as everyone else who thinks this movie sucks.

I remember putting this on for a friend without giving him any notice of what it was. When it got the hardcore scenes he lost his damn mind. It was never a top favorite of mine but I agree with Matt, it's a solid exploitation picture. I know they released a version without the inserts but that seems rather reactionary and not much fun. I feel the same way about CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST.

And I always enjoyed the ultra slo-mo. At the time when I was working at the meat plant we'd use those cameras to capture the machines working in production. This was pre-digital so the amount of detail it showed versus normal cameras slowed down was amazing. I guess it feels less amazing now and in the context of the movie it feels odd but I like that, it adds to the unique feel.

The version WITHOUT the hardcore inserts also had cuts to the eyeball scene.

          All the good stuff.

It'd be like ordering food, "One exploitation burger please, but keep it sensitive, hold the ignorant shit."

There are a few burger shots in the movie that need cosmetic bleaching. I remember someone on a forum years ago going on a massive rant about that spoiling their enjoyment of the film.

I recall being underwhelmed. If it wasn't for the porn would it be remembered. Production quality is dodgy, I hated the slow mo and all the interiors are very uncinematic. It is an impressively grimy piece of entertainment but I haven't seen itagain since my first viewing and I doubt I will. I'd rather give Ms .45 another spin or Freeze Me even.

This is a perfect example of what I mentioned in the collecting habits thread. Bought the Synapse disc when it came out and viewed it once, have never had any desire to watch it again. I'd agree with Dom that I'd much rather watch MS. 45 again (and have done so). And FREEZE ME has an emotionally devastating ending, while this film didn't really make me feel anything.

Man, I remember hearing so much about this film, and when I finally saw it, I fucking hated it. The cover for the Synapse disc was better than the film. That slo mo shit drove me up around the bend.

I saw it so long ago. Pre-Ian. I remember liking it a lot but being uncomfortable with the sex scenes. Certainly harder than Franco films which is what I was used to and into at the time. Probably wouldn't faze me now. Have though of rewatching but haven't gotten around to it.

My distant memory is of liking it, but not as much as i had thought that i would. I also remember the hardcore scenes feeling out of place. So i actually picked up a copy of the other version to see how that played, but i've never gotten back to it.

Got a grey market copy of this back when the earth cooled and dinosaurs dropped dead. Didn't know much about it and the initial viewing knocked me out of my seat. Wasn't expecting the hardcore, wasn't expecting all of the film to be honest. Think I pretty much raved about it on my old website.

Yeah, the slo mo gets a bit weird but that isn't the problem for me. How she gets so much time away during her slavery is the problem I have.

Like it or hate it, you'll still want a shower after viewing it.

This is crazy to me that people keep mentioning the slo mo because I don't remember it at all. My brain was in slo mo at the time so maybe it all synched up for me.

So i finally gave this another look thanks to this thread. Definitely enjoyed it a little more this time around, with expectations dialed down a bit. I'm with Scott in digging the slo-mo. But if you don't like the slo-mo, yeah, that'd be a deal breaker. Also, the hardcore scenes didn't seem as out of place as i remembered, i think i may have just objected to the general seventies schlubbiness of her customer. Overall good fun, just not quite the best revenge flick ever.
