  • Nikos Nikolaidis (Singapore Sling)

Some of you may recall me blathering on ecstatically in the What'd You Get Lately and What are You Watching threads about a box set containing all 8 theatrical features from the late Greek filmmaker Nikos Nikolaidis who is of course most infamous for the brilliantly batshit Singapore Sling. During that time, the official Nikolaidis website was being upgraded so the box set was more or less out of circulation, however earlier today, the shiny new official Nikolaidis website went live, meaning that not only is the set back up for sale, all the films are available for individual purchase, restored and subtitled. For those who prefer steaming, its also an option. The German BD of Singapore Sling is for sale as well.

There's also the official YouTube channel where 4 of the films have been uploaded as well as trailers and a ton of commercials helmed by Nikolaidis.

This new site was a labor of love from Nikolaidis family and a long time coming. Personally speaking, discovering the rest of his output has proven to be one of the most rewarding and fascinating cinematic rabbit holes I've traversed in a long while. Fans of Singapore Sling who are unfamiliar with his other work and in general fans of cinema from the roads less travelled should really seek these films out. Nikolaidis was the epitome of a true original, not unlike David Lynch, Alain Robbe-Grillet or Andrzej Zulawski, an artist who's collective influences resulted in films so unique and singular they occupy a weird little universe entirely their own. Highly recommended!

I've tried watching this one at least 2-3 times and just could not get into Singapore Sling. It has this style of acting, which is hard to describe, that's very similar to Stephen Sayadian and Jerry Stahl movies. But this was no Cafe Flesh or Dr. Caligari.

Fun fact, Meredyth Herold, who played the daughter wasn't even an actress. She just happened to be in Greece and somehow fell into the production. Imagine having never acted before and THAT is your first movie.
