  • Remastered The Stendhal Syndrome Blu-ray from Blue Underground

Looks like BU is double dipping on THE STENDHAL SYNDROME. Given the overwhelming scanner noise, it really needed to be re-scanned, so this is good news.

We can finally confirm that the Argento title we're working on is a newly remastered version of THE STENDHAL SYNDROME! We've gone back to the original camera negative and done a new 2K scan in it's proper 1.85:1 theatrical aspect ratio. The new restoration is absolutely gorgeous! Our upcoming Limited Edition Blu-ray will also include several new Extras, including the previously mentioned interview with Asia Argento!!

There was some controversy about this remaster being 1.85 instead of 1.66 so one of the people behind this sent some comparisons that are posted in the Blu-ray.com thread.

I am one who likes STENDHAL, so this is great news for me. I really struggle to watch the existing BU Blu-ray.

I remember a hilariously angry review on Amazon for the first Blue Underground release that said something along the lines of "Blu-ray? Who the fuck did the transfer on this, Blu-Ray Charles?!".

          From FB:

"A few people have expressed concern over the aspect ratio of our upcoming release of THE STENDHAL SYNDROME, so the Italian lab that did the new scan have provided us with some frame grabs for comparison. It's important to note that the new 2K scan was done from the Original Camera Negative (OCN), while previous transfers were done from an Interpositive (IP). When examining the OCN, the lab found that several shots were hard-matted to 1.85:1. They performed tests on several scenes, cropping the image to both 1.85:1 and 1.66:1. The 1.85:1 framing added significant picture information on both the left and right sides, while losing only a sliver of picture on the top and/or bottom (and the shots hard-matted to 1.85:1 lost nothing). Top image: Original Transfer (IP); Bottom image: New 2K Scan (OCN) [2K scan frame does not represent the quality of the final master, which has been fully graded and restored for our release]"

            Source.

There's a true art to putting together a special-edition disc package, as Blue Underground demonstrates with its upcoming hi-def release of Dario Argento's visually striking psycho-shocker THE STENDHAL SYNDROME. We've got the exclusive first word on the complete specs (including—full disclosure—a contribution by yours truly) as well as the cover art.

Blue Underground will release STENDHAL in a three-disc limited edition (a Blu-ray and two DVDs) July 25, featuring a new 2K restoration from the original uncensored camera negative. Argento scripted the 1996 film from a story he wrote with Franco Ferrini, and the cast is headed by Asia Argento, Thomas Kretschmann and Marco Leonardi; the great Ennio Morricone did the score. The synopsis: “When beautiful police detective Anna Manni [Asia] follows the bloody trail of a sophisticated serial murderer/rapist [Kretschmann] through the streets of Italy, the young woman falls victim to the bizarre 'Stendhal Syndrome'—a hallucinatory phenomenon which causes her to lose her mind and memory in the presence of powerful works of art. Trapped in this twilight realm, Anna plunges deeper and deeper into sexual psychosis, until she comes to know the killer's madness more intimately than she ever imagined.”

The movie will be presented in 1.85:1 widescreen and 1080p HD, with 7.1 DTS-HD, 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround EX, 2.0 DTS-HD/6.1 DTS-ES, 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround EX and Dolby Surround 2.0 soundtracks. The special features are:

            • New audio commentary by Troy Howarth, author of SO DEADLY, SO PERVERSE
            • New “Three Shades of Asia”: Interview with star Asia Argento
            • New “Prisoner of Art”: Interview with co-writer Franco Ferrini
            • New “Sharp as a Razor”: Interview with special makeup artist Franco Casagni
            • Interview with director Dario Argento
            • Interview with psychological consultant Graziella Magherini
            • Interview with special effects artist Sergio Stivaletti
            • Interview with assistant director Luigi Cozzi
            • Interview with production designer Massimo Antonello Geleng
            • Theatrical trailer
            • Poster and still gallery
            • Bonus collectible booklet featuring new writing by author Michael Gingold

Retail price is $39.98. (Note: The trailer below the art does not reflect the high-def transfer.)

Very tempted by this release. Sure it will be much better than my old DVD of the film

BU posted the details on their replacement program:
                            STENDHAL SYNDROME BLU-RAY UPDATE:

Recently, we were made aware of a minor compression issue and 2 bits of missing audio (English version only) on the new STENDHAL SYNDROME Blu-ray. We investigated and have now corrected the Blu-ray. We will be offering a replacement V2 disc for those with concerns about the aforementioned issues.

If you purchased the new 3-DISC LIMITED EDITION and the blu-ray disc art does not have “V2” on it, you may request a replacement Blu-ray Disc by emailing us at StendhalBDreplacement@gmail.com. You MUST include the following information in your email to qualify for a replacement disc:
                            · Your Name
                            · Mailing address
                            · Copy of receipt showing purchase of THE STENDHAL SYNDROME 3-Disc Limited Edition

The V2 Blu-ray Discs will be available to mail out in approximately 4 weeks. We thank you for your continued support and patience!

They dont say what is happening to the release for those who havnt bought it yet. Do we wait until a revised v2 edition is available from the retailers or do we order the V1 release and then claim a disc replacement?
