  • Film Movement Releasing Pelle The Conqueror

"Bille August's 1987 film PELLE THE CONQUEROR, which will be celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2017, is one of those rare films that scored the award-season trifecta, winning Cannes' Palme d'Or; the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film. The incomparable Max von Sydow stars as Lasse, an elderly and widowed farmer, who, with his young son Pelle, played by the then 11-year-old actor Pelle Hvenegaard, join a boatload of immigrants to escape from impoverished rural Sweden to Denmark's Baltic island of Bornholm in the 1890s. It is ultimately their loving relationship which sustains them through a difficult year on a new farm. Both a coming-of-age story as well as an immigrant tale, PELLE THE CONQUEROR is also notable because it took the Academy Award home to Denmark for the second consecutive year (BABETTE'S FEAST won it a year earlier). The Los Angeles Times called PELLE THE CONQUEROR, which was adapted from the classic Scandinavian novel by Danish author Martin Andersen Nexí¸, “a towering achievement…an exhilarating experience unlikely to be forgotten.” The film is also listed in The New York Times Guide to the Best 1000 Movies Ever Made."

Yeah, this is a good one. Perhaps a tad too sentimental IIRC. The Swedish DVD looks like absolute crap, so I'll gladly upgrade.
