Damn, now I'm going to have to go through all of my blu-rays to see if I can find wrinkles & individual hairs...

Not exactly my point. These were merely examples. You can take any texture or surface really, and still see the abomination of excessive DNR. One of the big advantages HD has over SD is increased detail, that it's truer to the source material, but if all detail is lost due to excessive filtering, what's the point in even going with BD over DVD? You can get almost the same result by upscaling an SD image to HD if that's the look you enjoy, except you'll lose some clarity and get worse color reproduction. To me detail and faithful film like appearance are important details in HD releases, especially as I already own many of these films on DVD since before. If you don't care, that's okay too, but then I would say DVD is probably a good enough substitute.

And just to be clear: Both of these releases look equally like steaming piles of shit. One just has the advantages of having good distribution, more realistic price point and the Italian dub.

There's other advantages to HD than just detail, such as improved color reproduction and sound quality.

Have you watched the CR version or are you judging by the screengrabs?
Why would anybody watch a scum show like Videodrome? Why did you watch it, Max?

Oh, no! Just seeing the song title has forced that song back into my head!

Judging from these screens. It's clearly from the same transfer, so the source material CR had to work with was crap from the get go.

I'm watching the film now and about halfway through it and the scanner noise is not that bad, The Blue Underground discs were waaaaayyy worse. The overall PQ in my book is not stellar but it ain't too bad either. It's the best I've ever seen this film look. As a caveat I would say the CR disc is overpriced for such a transfer though and if your on the fence and don't care about this film too much then spend your money elsewhere.

Even if the transfers were identical CR would win for including the English audio (you need to HEAR Hess as well as SEE Hess!) and for including English friendly extras.

Do I wish the transfer was a new master? Yes. Am I happy with this disc? Yes.
I'm with you, Ian. The transfer looks great -- certainly the best it's looked so far.

This film was shot in English like Cannibal Holocaust so any other language is just a poor dub.

Both the English and the Italian soundtracks are dubs and produced simultaineously. I just happen to prefer the Italian one. :thomason:

Every soundtrack of the film is necessarily a dub. That sure isn't Giovanni Lombardo Radice's voice on the English track, regardless of whether he spoke English on the set.
