  • Emma, puertas oscuras (José Ramón Larraz, 1974) - Spanish DVD

Stumbled upon this release on Amazon out of the blue earlier from Cadicy International:

    http://www.amazon.com/Emma-puertas-o...n%3A2650304011

I'd never heard of Cadicy International before so I checked out their site and was surprised to find out their a division of Dorado Films who've certainty made their presense known as of late with their Franco announcements.

This disc appears to be Spanish only but I'm curious about the quality. Last I knew the only versions of this film available were sourced from VHS tapes, although the boots have long been subtitled.

Good movie by the way. Interesting little bridge film, sandwiched in-between Scream and Die and Symptoms.

No shit? Might have to check this one out! I dig me late period Larraz sleaze.

Not positive ( either heard it on their podcast or read it on their FB page ) but believe this will be from an existing tape master, as they test the waters for these releases.
It's not English friendly either, although they may revisit it later and sub it.

They have access to film materials and may revisit this with English options as well.

Releasing tape sourced non English friendly releases to the US market seems daft to me but curious to see how this offshoot of Dorado pans out ( Dorado too ).

Report from a nice chap on Facebook:

I have the Cadicy International disc. It's reasonable quality but nothing exceptional. No remastering has been done - surprise, surprise - and judging from the opening credits, it's not in the correct aspect ratio (in fact, the packaging states 4x3 [1.33:1]). That said, it's perfectly watchable and definitely an upgrade from the overly murky bootlegs. For example, in the scenes set in the deserted country hotel, you can actually tell what's going on. Anyway, it's probably the only version we're going to get for the foreseeable future. As you already noted, Spanish audio only.
So suspicions more or less confirmed.

Does the disc have Spanish subtitles? If so, I'd be up for creating some English subs. (Unfortunately, my comprehension of spoken Spanish isn't up to the task of translating the dialogue 'on the fly'.)

I have seen this and I agree with Tom Clark that it is a good film. The copy had English subs and appeared to be from a vhs source.
Like a lot of Larraz films it would be interesting if better elements surface.

There is a fan subs out there for a few years. Of course these are timed to the VHS source so they may need some tweaks?
French subs are available @ opensubtitles.org.

I could mail you the subs ( or up them and link it ) if you want Paul.

Posted this in the Dorado thread but when asked if they are planning on releasing Emma after posting a photo of the poster on FB the response was:

Yes, we have released the Spanish version on DVD through our Cadicy International brand, but it was not HD quality from the 35mm print so we will be pairing it with Estigma I believe sometime this year.
