  • Ballad in Blood (Ruggero Deodato, 2016)

    The hell? New Deodato?

    NSFW:

Looks completely fucked. Details seem pretty scant at the moment save for the trailer which doesn't exactly give any indication as to what the plot is. There's also an official Facebook page.

    Behind the scenes video:

*Edit* Slightly off Spanish to English translation plot description from here:

The plot revolves around a party that perform several young people during the Halloween night, you get out of control to the point that the next day, a girl named Elizabeth, English student with Erasmus scholarship, turns up dead in mysterious ways. None of the young people involved to remember what happened that night.

Really glad we didn't get a Cannibal Holocaust or House on the Edge of the Park sequel.

Many thanks, even though that Black Candles write-up blows!

I might have to buy it. You know, just to support the release. I am fully aware that the film will be unwatchable.

Since I could not wait for a DVD, I rented this on VOD via my Cable-TV box.

Not as bad as I expected. Not a good film by any definition. But not as horrible as the trailer maide it out to be.

It had quite a bit of bad acting and iffy accents, and an inane plot and moronic unsympathetic characters, and it is quite clear that the old Deodato is totally out of touch with both the English language and how college kids behave and act.

But it did have lots of style, lots of sex/nuity, some blood and a smashing soundtrack by Claudio Simonetti, and these things made me dig it while shaking my head at how stupid it was.

So I was wrong. Not unwatchable at all. It had enough for me not to lose interest.

I feel most of you will find enough in it to make it worth a viewing, just like I did.

I'm not so sure. Perhaps that speaks to my fairly low opinion of my fellow humans these days but I actually don't think the behavior of these characters is all that far fetched. I take it this is supposed to be Deodato's warped idea of what went down in Amanda Knox's dorm? Whatever the case may be, its as whacked as the trailer made it look. The black guy has the best dialogue, some real gems like "Fuck you, black cat!" and "This bitch was a fuckin' whale!". It wasn't quite as violent as I expected but there was some nice spatter near the end and the sleaze factor is mighty high. Hell, not even 5 minutes into the film and there's a sex scene that ends in vomit. Loved the use of "Sweetly" from the House on the Edge of the Park soundtrack at the end even though the scene itself made fuck all sense.

I gave this one a chance and it's pretty bad. The sad part is that it isn't even "so bad it's good."

I finally tracked down the DVD of this on eBay.

It's very much in the vein of Washing Machine and equally enjoyable. Junkie logic is the order of the day as three amoral stoners attempt alternately to solve and cover up the murder of a roommate. Interludes of drug usage, alcohol abuse, petty crime, violence, gore, murdering the wrong person, nudity, invading the privacy of others, property destruction, male and female urination, corpse mutilation, rape and foul language ensure that the viewer is vicariously engaged; and it's all set against the backdrop of post-witch-apocalypse Mother-of-Tears Rome, which means something unwholesome is always going on.

Yes, the aforementioned scene where the guy vomits on his skanky, conniving girlfriend during sex is shocking for us, but for this jaded trio it was just an appetizer for the evening ahead. What I found as delightful as the vomit scene itself was the chick's peeved and weary reaction, suggesting that it wasn't the first time it had happened to her.

The Scandinavian disc is quite nice. The movie is in English and there are no forced subtitles.
