The two works otherwise don't seem to have anything to do with one another (the film is about a young man who can psychically commit violent acts against others, the book is about a witch's curse affecting a girl centuries later), making me wonder which came first. They're both from 1980, so the date doesn't offer a clue.
Originally I thought maybe the cheap DVD just ripped off the book cover, but the IMDb listing contains the Spanish poster (for the cinematic release titled ESTIGMA):
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079120/
That leads me to believe the British publisher Sphere Books probably saw the poster (I assume for the English-language release) and thought it was a neat illustration, so they used it for their product. Clarification from anyone with better information is always welcome.
Have a fun weekend, folks...VHS will never die!
