  • Arrow Releasing The Jacques Rivette Collection

    Just announced...

    Release Date: 30th November 2015
Format: Dual Format Blu-ray + DVD
Starring: Jean-Pierre Leaud, Bulle Ogier, Michael Lonsdale, Juliet Berto, Geraldine Chaplin, Joe Dallesandro, Maria Schneider
    Directed by: Jacques Rivette

    Synopsis:

The Jacques Rivette Collection brings together some of the director's hardest to see works, each restored, newly translated and debuting on home video for the first time in UK.

Out 1 is one of the crowning achievements of Rivette's remarkable career. Conceived as a television mini-series, this near-thirteen-hour monolith consists of eight feature-length episodes revolving around two theatre troupes, blackmail and conspiracy. Multiple characters introduce multiple plotlines, weaving a rich tapestry across an epic runtime.

Originally screened just the once in its full-length version in 1971, Out 1 was then re-conceived by Rivette as a four-and-a-half-hour feature. Making use of alternative and unseen footage, the director renamed this version Out 1: Spectre as an acknowledgement of its shadow-like nature. Both are presented in this boxed-set, fully restored and with newly-translated English subtitles.

Complementing Out 1 are two 'parallel films', Duelle (une quarantaine) and Noroí®t. The former sees Rivette head into fantasy territory: the Queen of the Sun (Bulle Ogier) and the Queen of the Night (Juliet Berto) search for a magical diamond in present-day Paris. The latter is a loose adaptation of The Revenger's Tragedy and a pirate tale, starring Geraldine Chaplin (Nashville, Cría cuervos). Also included is Merry-Go-Round, in which Joe Dallesandro (Flesh for Frankenstein) and Maria Schneider (The Passenger, Last Tango in Paris) are summoned to Paris, kickstarting the most surreal of all Rivette's mysteries.

Very cool news although it'd be even nicer if L'amour fou and La Belle Noiseuse were announced sometime soon.

Actually hyperventilating over getting both versions of Out 1 in high definition with full subtitles. Fucking dream come true.

The book is apparently over 200 pages already.

        From Arrow's FB page:

We're very saddened to hear that Jacques Rivette has died. We have heard through friends and have no official links just yet but expect more information to surface online soon. Rivette was a titan of not only the French new wave but of all cinema. His work is dear to our hearts and we are incredibly proud to have released a small portion of it. We can't recommend checking out his films enough, if our Rivette box is too daunting a starting place, Paris, nous appartient and Celine and Julie Go Boating have been released by the BFI (and are an excellent start), Eureka have released Le Pont du Nord, and Artificial Eye have released numerous key works. RIP Mr Rivette, your work will live forever.

As if enough people haven't died already this year. Terrible loss. Alzheimer's. Had no idea he was sick. Then again he was very private. The Nun (1967), L'amour fou (1969), Celine and Julie Go Boating (1976), Merry-Go-Round (1981) and La Belle Noiseuse (1991) are all incredible films.

Lets also not forget, Rivette was also one of the very first to publically stick up for Showgirls (1995) in that now famous Senses of Cinema interview where he gave his always entertaining thoughts on a number of films, most hilariously when he shit on Titanic (1997) and said Cameron couldn't direct his way out of a paper bag

Anyone else order the set direct from Arrow? I placed my preorder a while back, and the site lists it as in stock, but mine hasn't shipped yet. :(

Many people are still waiting on their sets (myself included), many weren't sent out until the 21st because Arrow was waiting on special packaging to ship them in, though quite a few dispatch orders were accidentally e-mailed a week prior. If you get in touch with Arrow they should be able to let you know what's going on with your order, all pre-orders have supposedly shipped by now.

Very sad to hear about Rivette. The only film of his I've seen so far is Le Pont Du Nord which is so fucking good I feel confident listing him as a favourite director. When the Arrow boxset finally arrives, watching it will be a bittersweet experience.

I got mine direct from Arrow. They were late in mailing it due to a wait on packaging but it turned up last week. Im in UK though.
If it isn't listed as "shipped" in your order history by now I would email them.

Love some of his films. Would like to pick up Out 1 sometime. Have an old torrent around but I'm sure the legit release will be much more watchable.

                    More Rivette coming in May!

                    ***SURPRISE MAY US TITLE ANNOUNCEMENT!***

Good news! Rivette's Duelle, Noroît and Merry-Go-Round will be heading to the US in May!

NEW US TITLE: The Jacques Rivette Collection (Dual Format Blu-ray & DVD)

North American pre-orders links should be live soon!
                    Release Dates: 23 May

In 1975, Jacques Rivette reunited with Out 1 producer Stéphane Tchal Gadjieff with the idea of a four-film cycle. He would create a quartet of interconnected films, each in a different genre. One was to be a love story, another a Western, and there was to be a fantastical thriller and a musical comedy starring Anna Karina and Jean Marais too.

Ill health intervened, and only two of the films were completed. Duelle (une quarantine) sees Rivette in fantasy territory, cross-pollinating Val Lewton, Jean Cocteau and film noir as the Queen of the Sun (Bulle Ogier) and the Queen of the Night (Juliet Berto) search for a magical diamond in present day. Its parallel film, Noroît (une vengeance), is a pirate tale – and a loose adaptation of The Revenger’s Tragedy – starring Geraldine Chaplin (Nashville, Cría cuervos).

A third film began production – Marie et Julien starring Albert Finney and Leslie Caron – but Rivette succumbed to nervous exhaustion and shooting was abandoned. When he did return to filmmaking, Rivette borrowed some of the elements of Duelle and Noroît and came up with Merry-Go-Round. Joe Dallesandro (Trash, Flesh for Frankenstein) and Maria Schneider (Last Tango in Paris, The Passenger) are summoned to Paris, which leads to one of the most surreal and mysterious tales in a career that was dominated by surrealism and mystery.
