I can't wait for the blu ray of Countess Perverse. It will be great to finally see the XXX version of that film too, and on blu ray on top of that! Oh and if Mondo Macabro can do another Jess Franco film on blu ray try to do The Obscene Mirror on blu ray. I know there are apparently some problems with releasing it on blu ray in the United States for some reason as no one has jumped on it, but I see there is a French DVD, but I am not going to buy it because it has no English Language track, or no English subtitles, so it'd be useless to me. But I do want to see that film someday hopefully. Also if any companies are listening try to get any Jess Franco films on Blu ray, even his adult films, or DVD if that is all that they can be released on, but I much prefer blu ray, but I know sometimes elements may not exist for a possible blu ray release.

yeah I understand Jared. I have to order all my blu ray and dvd off the internet, so there is not buying locally for me. So I think they forget that it's not like people can impulse buy a Jess Franco film in the stores anymore like in the past when you could go into a video store and see a film and buy it because of the cool box cover. Back in the 90's when I bought VHS I used to buy all kinds of weird stuff just because are great advertising covers on the VHS boxes, but because of internet buying now, that's no longer the case, I buy based on knowing about the films now and if they sound interesting to me. I think Jess Franco is more popular now than he has been in many years and it's great to see his films in HD looking brand new.

A Ritmo De Jess: Every year when the marathon rolls around the news always does a story on the oldest runner in the race. As a jogger myself I can't imagine waking up in the morning at 80 and thinking "shit... I've got to run 42 kilometres today." Still as mind bendingly horrible as that is it sounds like a picnic compared to having to put together a guerilla film.
This is an interesting behind the scenes of Jess' last film. There's no interviews and no talks to camera so for an hour and a half you're just watching people work. Which can get a bit dull but I'm used to making films under similar conditions and I'm always curious as to how others do it. Particularly when it's Jess... my mind has always boggled at trying to understand how he makes his films.
Jess works like a silent film director feeding the actors as they do the scene. Which explains about the acting in his films and the lacksadasical pace. Interestingly he doesn't seem to be working off notes on his lap and no way is he capable at this point in his career of remembering long tracks of dialogue so he is essentially making the film up as the actors are portraying it. Which sounds like a nightmarish way of working and the reality looks just as grim. He must still be post dubbing all his dialogue? I don't see a boom on set and it's hard to imagine Jess would get any clean audio given the amount he talks.
But as interesting as all that stuff is this is Grim. No one is at their best at 83 but Jess really does come off as a mean, self pitying bastard which almost makes me wish I hadn't watched the film. It's not the way I want to think of the man. He's lucky here to have a lead actress who not only has a fine body but seems to be one of the more easy going and understanding sorts I've ever seen. Jess doesn't seem too interested. Even basic questions like "what's the frame?" from the dop have him acting like he's talking to children who wont stop bothering him.
I haven't seen the film they're making but how one arises from this mess is hard to imagine. Why does he do it to himself? He sums it up himself (paraphrasing) 'I don't have anyone or anything. If I don't do this I don't have anything." Which is pretty sad stuff. Actually I do regret watching this... I w8sh it was a behind the scenes from the 70s."Never let the fact that they are doing it wrong stop you from doing it right." Hyman Mandell.

Can anyone explain to me the differences between the various cuts of Barbed Wire Dolls? I just got the Full Moon DVD, which says its uncut, but it's 81 minutes long. IMDB says the full uncut version is 90 minutes. It's all in the reflexes.

I was wondering when this would turn up subbed. There is no official release, but a couple of years back it was claimed to be part of some package deal with Les emmerdeuses, Countess Perverse, Paisir a trois and others to be restored. Most of these obviously were, so there was/is some hope that this and Les emmerdeuses will follow.
I have this on dvd-r, non subbed and yes quality is vhs or below. I think as usual there are different cuts of this. The one I have has a couple of hardcore scenes I think. I like this film and its sibling Lustful Amazons quite a bit. No substance to them, but quite good fun.

Flowers of Perversion (2005) - What to say about this digital de Sade "adaptation". Well, stylistically it fits right in with the other films from this period. A fair amount of image distortion and tinkering around with the color, at times goes totally black and white with the only color on screen being a splash of blood red. It wouldn't be a stretch to compare it to Helter Skelter given its utterly random nature however unlike Helter Skelter this one actually has somewhat of a story to revolve around. Its thin but its there. There's also constant cutaways to two gyrating lesbians that have nothing to do with anything even a bit of comedy by way of Jess constantly interrupting a cavorting Lina and Rachel Sheppard. Carmen Montes in one of her earliest roles for Franco is her typically magnetic self and this is the best Rachel Sheppard ever looked. It'll probably piss most people off. I like it.
