  • Short Night Of The Glass Dolls

Camera Obscura have this slated for Blu-ray release soon and have made the following announcements on FB:

"The title has been guessed! And we are very, very proud of it since it's a personal top-5 Italian genre film: Aldo Lado's incredible debut and masterpiece LA CORTA NOTTE DELLE BAMBOLE DI VETRO (SHORT NIGHT OF GLASS DOLLS). Nothing more needs to be said about the movie, but here are a few words about our edition: It will be a filled-to-the-brim 2-disc set that won't leave any stone unturned. Details will follow soon.
The winners are: Ville T. Schumpeter, Marito Almada and Thomas Wiatr! Please send us a PN with the title of your choice and address.
By the way: For everyone who's sad now that the movie has been released on DVD before, we can say you must persevere now because the next two tites will be premieres again with more of those in the pipeline!"

"Since it's already all over Facebook, here comes the first extras announcement for SHORT NIGHT OF GLASS DOLLS: Back-to-back with COME CANI ARRABBIATI, we've also recorded an audio commentary for SHORT NIGHT with Christian KeíŸler and Marcus Stiglegger!
Apart from that, the already legendary commentary with actor/singer Jí¼rgen Drews will also be on the disc! This time with English subtitles for your listening/viewing pleasure."

"The biggest extra of the SHORT NIGHT OF GLASS DOLLS disc is a circa 90-minute doc with director Aldo Lado and an older interview with the leading man Jean Sorel."

Appears to be due on June 16th.
This looks hard to resist, and can't help but get excited as to what the 2 next in line premiere titles might be.

I saw this on the Anchor Bay giallo box set back in the day and remember being underwhelmed. That release must have been a long time ago though because I just watched the trailer for this and it rings no bells at all. Has to be said though, awesome poster. Maybe the best giallo poster. Always makes me happy when it comes up on my tvs screensaver.

This film took a while for me to appreciate. After the third viewing, it clicked. Really great film. And totally agree with Dom D. about the poster.

I'm sat on the fence regarding whether to buy this. Havent seen it, but having been slightly underwhelmed with Killer Reserved nine seats and Sprits of Death (the films not the transfers) I'm a bit wary about spending the money. On the other side these releases seem to go up in price the rarer they become, so considering picking it up whilst its still current.

I love this one, it's not your typical giallo at all, and in fact some don't even consider it one. I love the conspiracy elements as well as the bleak tone. Wonderful locations and a haunting Morricone score, along with a terrific cast make this one well worth seeing in my opinion. The photography is excellent also. Deeply unsettling ending...Coincidentally, I had some friends over this weekend who know nothing about gialli, I showed them a giallo trailer compilation I have that covers just about all the major films and it was the trailer for SHORT NIGHT OF GLASS DOLLS that really captured their attention, they asked if I had the film and when could we watch it.

I'd rate this much higher than KILLER RESERVED NINE SEATS and particularly SPIRITS OF DEATH. Can't wait for this release.

              The Best Laid Plans Dept.

Sadly the negative was in bad shape making this a much more involved effort.
              CO reports on FB:
We have to say this about the SHORT NIGHT OF GLASS DOLLS transfer: Unfortunately, it's not comparable with our previous HD transfers. One reason for this is that Aldo Lado shot the film very soft to create a dream-like atmosphere while our other films had a very sharp focus. The second, real problem was that the negative was extremely destroyed -- which is something we would have never thought possible, and if it wouldn't have been SHORT NIGHT, we might not even have bought the license. Regarding dust and scratches, we were on about the level of TOP SENSATION, but there was yet another, even more drastic problem: About half the material was moldy. In short, we basically had to take the whole film apart and put it back together in order to get a presentable result. Weeks of restoration by hand, and so on, were necessary to get the defects in shape. I think the result came out as very watchable, though!

And more from CO via DirtyPictura forum ( manually corrected auto translation by a bluray.com member where all this spilled out last week )
Our approach for all our transfers is always this: raw scan from a Lab we trust in Italy, colortimed, no "hard" color correction. Scan is sent to germany, to a lab we trust, dirt is removed with light autocorrection (and no, the grain will not be touched), transfer comes to me, I'm doing things by hand that are not fixable with Autoclean, frame by frame. For Malastrana 3,5 weeks, with 8 to 10 hours of work per day. Would normally have been priceless, but i "sacrifice" myself for the art. I personally do not like dirt, that's why I'm removing it. After that, comes the color correction. For Malastrana some more work was done at our German lab, which I could not/did not want to do here. Namely, removing part of the mold, which was removable without using manual retouching. For this part, we freezed frames for static scenes, in which only one person or nothing moves. As a result the grain is frozen of course. The remaining mold stains, I have as best I could, removed by hand, also grain was destroyed during this. Mostly the first frame has been replaced after cut with the third frame of the scene, if the scene was static and the (first) frame was heavily damaged. Moreover, came millions of tiny dust defects, small scratches, etc., which also has not catched by the automatic cleaning. Again, I removed the scratches as best i could. In the end everything was a patchwork of various restoration techniques from which a partially frozen, partially holey etc. grain, plus the remnants of the very fine mold spores, you simply can not clean by hand. All this did not look nice, so we decided to do what we would never do otherwise, and have therefore been never done: Digital grain reduction and afterwards artificial grain reinserted to have homogeneity. The tools for this are professional tools and work very well. What you call as digital mush, is actually analogous mush, because the scenes (focus) are just relatively soft. Since I became a father a week ago and just manage only 10% of my normal daily workload, I just do not feel like to present any evidence - sorry. Maybe in a few days time, but my priority is now changing diapers and trying at the moment, alongside yet to earn a bit of money.

Clearly CO bent over backward and put forth a herculean effort and based on that cap comparison the results looks pretty good & most likely the best possible.

Wooah! Good Lordy!! I may just wait for reviews before buying this. Sounds like hours of work, but doesn't really scream buy me right now, considering I've never see the film.

                  Camera Obscura

"We have good news (or probably bad news for all of those who replied in various forums to our openness in a less than friendly tone and with unfounded assertions): We've talked a lot with our two labs in the last few days and ultimately decided to abandon all reason and sanity and start the SHORT NIGHT OF GLASS DOLLS transfer from scratch. This means a new scan with optical scratch removal tools to reduce defects, scanning the entire content of the 2P-frame, new filtering of the remaining defects without de- and regraining. In the end, this means a bitter loss of a couple thousand euros, 3.5 weeks of lifetime for the manual restoration that was done on the old master (plus the time for the manual restoration of the new one), but in exchange, being able to release the discs in all conscience. And our reputation is always more important to us than profit. There will definitely be more small remaing defects than in the first transfer, but therefore the film's naturalness is retained -- the way we and most of you like it. The release will have to be pushed back further into the summer, though. More information will follow"
