That's still a mighty impressive list, Takuma.

Despite those Blurays having some clear problems and the selected films not always being that great, it's a pleasure to watch them anyways. Can't imagine how marvellous they might look in cinema getting projected from a good 35mm print. Maybe someday ...

I'm especially looking forward to the December batch. Some nice looking titles in there from Kumashiro Tatsumi (haven't seen any of them yet but all of them seem to generally be highly regarded works of him) and of course LOVE HOTEL and ASSAULT! JACK THE RIPPER. Really hope Nikkatsu will continue with these rereleases in 2017.

Thanks for the comment Rakesh! I don't really know anything about how any of this DNR and other stuff works... I just know it looks bad. ;)

Btw, the Sometimes Like A Prostitute disc has some additional problems. I'm not entirely sure (once again :P ) what causes it but it seems like most (if not all) of the first frames of each different cut have some damage... sometimes a lot, sometimes very little. Maybe whatever that was used to splice the negative together damaged the negatives? And Nikkatsu decided to keep the frames intact, which is fine by me. All the following shots have the damage and like I said it is always (well at least at every cut I checked) one frame (though I have to admit I never checked if the preceding frame is undamaged or not, just that the very first frame after a cut is damaged... :P ):

I'm just annoyed they have to make these completely unnecessary "enhancements" to what looks like superb quality scans. If people can't handle the grain they can remove it with their TVs and/or players.

Oh and there's this thing going on with probably all the discs (I checked two from the second batch and one from the first one) where the top and bottom of the image look like this (the horizontal lines). I have always associated that with edge enhancement (And if these discs are DNRd like it looks to me, they probably included some edge enhancement as well) but don't really know for sure.

I believe they did a low pass filter to control film grain, which accounts for the horizontal ringing which is visible around the letterbox bars. The screenshots look pretty good, but I agree with you. It would look spectacular without any image manipulation.

Unfortunately I can't post screens from the Blu-ray.
The forum shows the images smaller than they are.

I'm with you on this, but there is one exception to the rule: Girl and the Wooden Horse Torture (1982)

Takashi Ishii wrote the screenplay for that one. The film feels a lot more like Ishii than Dan; I'd be surprised if the depth and visuals originated from Dan.

    Thanks for these, Takuma.

What's the "nasty" in NASTY DIVER? I've never seen that.

ONIROKU DAN films usually leave me cold. I sometimes wonder why he's "famous" since he's not doing anything that a hundred others haven't done or imagined before. Movies based on his works are still pretty much plotless.

Am I alone with my thoughts on Dan?

Since one of the upcoming October DVD releases is Sukeban Sex Violence, I though I should re-post my old (slightly updated) comments and a few VoD screencaps:

Sukeban Sex Violence (Japan, 1973) [VoD] - 2/5
Nikkatsu was no stranger to girl gang movies, having pioneered the genre with the Stray Cat Rock series. This modest roman porno is a far cry from those films or Toei's pinky violence films. It's 70 minutes of sex, schoolgirl fights, rock music, and more sex. It should be a sound concept, but comes out far less exiting than you might hope. Like most other sukeban films made in the Roman Porno genre (e.g. Sukeban Mafia: Dirty Insult), the main cast lacks any credibility and merely looks like a bunch of sex film stars pretending to be bad girls. There's even a comedic fat sukeban girl who is bound to get on the viewer's nerves. The most outrageous exploitation element is actually found in the poster, which, despite giving the "correct" reading “Sukeban Sex Violence”, clearly states “High School Girl Sex Violence” in kanji characters. Two birds with one stone.

I should have a few screencaps somewhere, let's see...

Here are the other October titles and covers:

Well, since there were only 6 BD covers, and 3 had the title written in English, one had the number "21" written on it (Wet Lust: 21 Strippers), and one had a high school girl in the cover (High School Girl's Diary) that's the only one left over

    Yes to both.

That may be because it's also know as Oh Women! A Dirty Song. In my opinion, it's the 4th best Roman Porno film ever made (after Female Delinquent: A Docu-Drama, Rape Ceremony, and Love Hotel). It's a jaw dropping rock n roll sleze fest about asshole rock star Yuya Uchida, played by Yuya Uchida himself! Lots of great rock music, an amazing performance by Uchida, and many unforgettable scenes, such as the one where Uchida's new girlfriend is strangling him with a telephone cord during sex while Uchida's other girlfriend is listening and crying at the other end of the line. Also features a great supporting performance by Rikiya Yasuoka as Uchida's manager.

A few screencaps from the old VoD version below:

    Uchida

    Uchida's girlfriends

Angry Uchida punching random people in the face on the street

Uchida comes home and finds his gals having fun without him. He's not happy

    Uchida and Yasuoka

    Uchida rocking

Typical Roman Porno poster... the main character is barely in it (just like Red Violation...)

I'd love to see Takechi's films, too, especially the ones you mention, Rakesh.

I would love to see some of Tetsuji Takechi's films on blu ray, preferably uncensored, but I think the chances of that are slim to none. His later explicit movies like "Daydream", "Oiran", and "Koya Hijiri" are amazing.

Which one is Woods are Wet? I think I have that film on dvd-r but it's been a long time since I've taken a look at it. The artwork for Assault! JTR looks pretty good and I've never heard of Rolling on the Road.
