  • Bruceploitation Documentary In The Works

There's a kickstarter campaign running right now to fund this.

""Bruceploitation - A cultural phenomenon mostly seen in the 1970's & early 80's after the 1973 death of martial artist and actor Bruce Lee. A portmanteau of the name "Bruce" and exploitation, it refers to the practice on the part of filmmakers in mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan who hired Bruce Lee look-alike actors ("Lee-alikes") to star in many cheap knock-off martial arts movies to cash in on Lee's success after his death."
    -Wikipedia

Bruce Lee was a legend. However, even his death didn't stop his image, mannerisms, and iconic look from being exploited by others for over a decade afterwards. We know about Mr. Lee's life, death, and the legacy he left behind... but what about the “others” who came after? Why did they make so many knock-off movies imitating Bruce Lee? How did these projects come to fruition? What's their story?

A few interviews have popped up over the years: actors telling their story of how they came to be a Bruce Lee impersonator. But we've never learned the whole truth. There have been many documentaries about Bruce Lee and the subject of his "imitators" is mentioned, but then it's quickly swept under the rug. No one seems to want to talk about this subject or the many actors involved. But I do!!! Our goal for this documentary is to locate these people and explore this strange sensation genre of film known simply as “Bruceploitation” and finally meet the real clones of Bruce Lee.

    We'll ask:

Who were these people? Our intention is to track down all (or most) of these actors and find out: Who they were? Where did they come from?

How did they become involved with these projects? Does anyone ever want to live in the shadow of a legend? What led them to want to be the next 'Dragon'?

What were they intending with their portrayal? While some were unaware they were playing a Bruce Lee clone, others were deliberately hired to mimic him. What were they going for with their portrayals? Was it meant to be an homage? A parody? An original take on an old image?

What are their thoughts on Bruce Lee, his family, & his legacy?
Aside from imitating the legend, what are their thoughts on the original man himself? How do they feel about their portrayal of Bruce Lee affecting the Lee family? How do they feel about the legacy Bruce left behind? Do they feel they added something to it? Or made it a mockery?

How do they feel looking back on these films?
It's been 30-40 years since they played their parts. How do they feel looking back on their roles? Would they have played them differently? Would they have done them at all? How do they feel being such a huge part of pop culture?"

If it's successful they're going to try and track down Bruce's Li and Le as well as Dragon Lee, Bruce Ly, Bronson Lee, Bruce Leung, Bruce Lai, Bruce Thai, Steve Lee and Bruce K. L. Lee!!!

Hope it succeeds. It's an interesting chapter in Exploitation and Martial Arts film history.

Me too. I think the goals are pretty optimistic, but hey, shoot for the sky. I'd love to see it happen and to see this dude track down all of those fake Bruce's. There's no way that wouldn't be fascinating.
