  • Kí´kí´sei burai hikae (Japan, 1972) [VoD] - 2/5
The first film in the Muramasa trilogy. These are relatively obscure films for never having been available on video, despite being Toho films based on a Kazuo Koike manga. Unfortunately, this is not an exploitation movie like most other Koike adaptations, but a comedy. Murasaki is a high school boy who gets all the girls and beats the guys with his karate and kendo skills. But he's not all that much of a badass; in fact he's just a goofy manga hero gone live action character who needs to get to Tokyo to meet his brother. On his journey he meets various silly characters, sleeps with at least half dozen girls, beats an all-gaijin girls' motorcycle gang, and makes some money. Harmless mainstream / family friendly entertainment with some laughs and nostalgia, and quite a few pairs of boobs.

I've seen a few of Mendoza's films but KINATAY is by far my fave and the same with Khavn. Not really a fan of his shorts but his documentaries are worth checking out. The scene in KINATAY where they viciously sexually assault the prostitute before hacking her up with a bolo is a real gut punch every time I see it. MONDO is just a some crazy shit all around.

KINATAY is a pretty amazing film.

I would also highly recommend SERBIS (Service), especially as its setting is a cinema.

yup, I've seen that one but it's been ages. Might have to dig out the dvd again because I do recall I enjoyed it quite a bit.

I can't tell from that screen capture but is that an authentic gaijin gang or nihonjin in "whiteface"?

        • SERBIS also has some hardcore sequences.

I know you gave it a rather tepid review but the movie seems kind of fun in a goofy way. Do you know if the manga was ever published in English editions?

I tried looking for the dvd yesterday but couldn't find it. I need a better cataloging system. But yeah, I do recall it had a documentary feel to it as if the cameraman was just following around this dysfunctional Filipino around that theater.

speaking of hardcore sequences, I decided to revisit Masashi Yamamoto's TAMPON TANGO earlier. About a bunch of amateurs setting out to make a hardcore porno and it's definitely hardcore as there is no pixelation or optical fogging here. They even show the money shot. It's lame for a straight porn but I kept watching because it literally breaks out in an orgy of bizarre sequences at the end & has a feelgood goofy feel about it. I enjoyed some of Yamamoto's later stuff like Junk Food and even thought the one about the stalker targeting Sora Aoi was okay too.

                No idea about the manga.

                • The post about CREST OF THE WOLF a few pages back inspired me to dig out my copy WOLFGUY: ENRAGED LYCANTHROPE and lo and behold, I didn't even realize that I had upgraded to a better DVD rip from the low res fullscreen TV broadcast version with the commercials intact. :cuckoo: Still a blast after all these years.

Not a dvd rip, since there is no dvd.

Probably the broadcasting from Toei channel, which I also recorded last month.

I was wondering about that since that fan subbed TV version was the only one available for the longest time. Well, anyway I'm glad this Toei version is a major upgrade all around. Btw, do you know the Eurasian looking actress in the screen capture who came to Chiba's rescue on the motorcycle?

I decided to have a DEMON HUNTER MITSURUGI marathon and watched all 12 eps consecutively. One of the more interesting tokusatsu due to the show using claymation and stop motion techniques as opposed to just a guy in a rubber suit. Also, it's set in the Edo period but the 3 ninja demon hunters look they're straight out of the 60s/70s.

                      • I watched Sex & Fury last night and Zero Woman: Red Handcuffs a couple of nights ago. Tonight, I think I'll watch something out of the Pinky Violence set.

                        • Just caught a CATIII exploitation take on the infamous Braemer Hill murders titled SUBURB MURDER. Pretty much pure unadulterated sleaze. Old Shaw Brothers stalwart, Ku Feng is in this playing the abusive father.

Then it was time for me to revisit Nam Lai-choi's manga adaptation, PEACOCK KING. This crazy monster & martial arts filled fantasy mashup has its moments. Yuen Biao is still relatively in his prime here and of course, considering the low budget & lack of CGI, the claymation monsters still manage to look pretty cool in a John Carpenter early 80s type of way.

                          • Aha...SUBURB MURDER was pretty sleazy as I remember....one of the cops from BUNMAN was pushed up to lead actor in this one if I remember correctly...I remember it being pretty good for what it was (even with the usual amateur foreigners in it!)

Good memory. Yeah, I remember King Kong was in Dr. Lamb as well. I also remember him from the direct to video Danny Lee one, Shoot to Kill. I have a copy of it ripped from a laserdisc but alas, it doesn't have English subs.

I finished watching 18 BRONZEGIRLS OF SHAOLIN earlier. Nothing like the Joseph Kuo/Carter Wong namesakes. Lame kung fu comedy interspersed with a couple of mediocre fight scenes at the end. The 18 Bronze Girls training sequences are lackluster as well. The best thing I can say about this flick is that the copy I have is from the remastered German print and it looks pretty decent with a nice widescreen anamorphic presentation.

                              • Caught a double bill of Noboru Ando's CHRONICLE OF FUGITIVE DAYS AND SEX. Not sure how accurate is the portrayal of Ando's life on the run and yeah, he probably took some artistic liberties to make his sexual prowess seem larger than life but the dude always struck me as a bad motherfucker. Just that long scar running down his cheek makes him look like someone you don't want to get on his bad side. He has some memorable lines and he even goes out like a G at the end.

Up next was the Korean horror/crime thriller, KILLER TOON. This started out great but sizzled somewhere between the halfway point. You can see the twist during the finale coming a mile away at the end since the director Kim Yong-gyun kept going to the well once to often. It had the makings of a clever thriller if the script wasn't so plodding and the director wasn't so hamfisted in his portrayal of the victims & their comeuppance. A little more subtlety would've gone a long way here.
