  • Two japanese films i'm looking forward to later this year

The first is Hitoshi Matsumoto's R100 scheduled to be released on October 5. I wasn't a fan of SCABBARD SAMURAI but BIG MAN JAPAN was hilariously funny. This looks like a sex comedy pushed to the limits which should be fun.

The second is Sion Sono's WHY DON'T YOU PLAY IN HELL? which is scheduled for late September release. This looks outrageously demented & a nice change of pace from Sono's serious toned post-Tohuku earthquake/tsunami themed films of late.

yessir! Sono is certainly one of those directors that perks up my interest whenever he releases anything new. His "hate" trilogy is right up there with Park Chan Wook's "vengeance" trilogy as my favorite trio of films from any director extant. I remember a few years ago, he mentioned in an interview that his pre-Suicide Club films would be made available in the US but alas, it never came to fruition. If I were a rich man, I would just go ahead & order the Japanese box set even without English subs.

Sono is just a wild and crazy guy! Just check him out with the tengu mask cup & boxing gloves. I want to track down his early pinku films out of curiosity. He says they were just straight porn but I bet he snuck in some Christian symbolism in there somehow. let me backtrack there because he also directed a gay porno too but I have zero interest in checking that one out -- altho' there is nothing wrong with it for those so inclined. ;)

                Worth a watch.....

Black and white (shot in 16mm I think)...It was about a killer looking for a room to rent.....A female estate agent guides him through Tokyo at the end of the 20th century.....

I also saw I AM SION SONO (Totally Weird!!)..only about 30 mins long,,,,

also saw this pinku of his from befor e Suicide Circle

                http://www.cho-yaba.com/pinku/pinku.php?idf=685

....He is in it too...Nothing really TOO out of left field for a pinku.....kinda disappointing on the whole for a film of his...Was expecting more of his style in there!

                EDIT:

Though I have kept up with a few OLD Sion Sono movies...i for some reason havent seen GUILTY OF ROMANCE from 2011...What is wrong with me!!!

I also saw I AM SION SONO & that was some totally weird shit! I'm going to have to check out HEYA pretty soon. Those early Team Sono flicks are something else lol. yeah, well guess I can pass on his pinku film since it doesn't appear to be anything special in terms of the genre. The last Sono early film I watched was UTSUMISHI, the one with the famous photographer Nobuyashi Araki playing himself and the scene that sticks out is the chef screwing the high school student on the camera dolly as it rolls down the incline.

GUILTY OF ROMANCE is my least favorite of the trilogy but definitely worth watching. For Sono's muse, Megumi Kagurazaka going full frontal if nothing else. Sion Sono is a lucky man to be married to her eh?

                    Hey,

Just finished watching GUILTY OF ROMANCE...and i liked it....However, I feel it is not one of the BEST from SONO...but still interesting and worth watching....

The scene at the dining table was worth watching the movie for on its own!!!

The two main actresses did an amzing job carrying the movie and were both totaly convincing in their transformations....

i didnt really get the VERY end of the movie though....what happened to the young guy...and why?

Also, what was the releveance of teh paint balloons?????

Also, did you see the 119 minute version...or the original 144 minute version.......I heard the shorter "international " cut erased almost the whole of the police detectives story.....

It's been a while since I saw it, so the details are a bit fuzzy but I don't recall the ending you're talking about? Which young guy? The pimp dressed in that A CLOCKWORK ORANGE garb? yeah, unfortunately I have only seen the international cut on the Eureka blu ray...I would totally love to see the domestic 144 min cut because the back story & police investigation involving Detective Kimura seemed interesting & I probably missed a lot of the nuances of the film with that part edited out. I remember a couple years ago, Olive Films was supposed to release both versions domestically but I don't know what happened with that? Besides the Japanese print, I believe the Rapid Eye German blu ray is the only other alternative to see the complete version.

I totally agree regarding the scene where Mitsuko takes Izumi to meet her outwardly prim & proper mother for tea. I couldn't stop laughing at their tit for tat exchange. As far as the paint balloons, you got me? I figure it's just Sono being his usual quirky self. I have no idea what the symbolism behind that was about nor the literary reference to Franz Kafka's THE CASTLE towards the later third of the film -- I never read that novel, so I'm out of the loop there as well. My initial impression was that this movie was Sono's take on Bunuel's BELLE DE JOUR or Godard's MY LIFE TO LIVE but I was surprised to find out that it was actually loosely based on a real life murder that became a cause celebre for the miscarriage of justice by the Japanese legal system.

Yeah, like COLD FISH, the actual murder was based on fact....and then SONO took the ball and ran with it in his own direction!!!

The CASTLE references were all through the movie (was even written on the wall of the shitty apartment building)...and it was the central thread of the movie...The Castle is understood to be about alienation, bureaucracy, the seemingly endless frustrations of man's attempts to stand against the system, and the futile and hopeless pursuit of an unobtainable goal[

The Japanese version is the way to go...The detective scenes add quite a bit to the proceedings..i understand HOW they could take them out of the movie though...i can see the film working WITHOUT the bits they cut out...althouigh some of the extra bits will surprise you.....and they do reflect the overall themes / direction of the movie as a whole...

....and YES Sono IS a lucky man to be married to that woman!!!..........The other woman in the movie reminded me of BRANDON LEE as THE CROW when she was all done up at night!!...

It's not even low budget but more like NO BUDGET! yeah, the director Takanori says he really liked Kitamura's VERSUS & I have to say that's about the only movie from Kitamura that is any good IMHO. Although, I haven't seen NO ONE LIVES yet, so I'll withhold judgment on that one but I got it somewhere on my PC & will watch it sometime soon. It's the same way with Iguchi for me...I just can't get into him and never cared for his films...well, about the only Sushi Typhoon release that I enjoyed & was willing to part money with so far is Sono's COLD FISH. I tried to watch YAKUZA WEAPON not too long ago but I couldn't stand it and had to shut it off. Anyway, I digress....yeah, I agree that if this flick has the same kinetic raw energy of VERSUS then it should be pretty decent.
