    • Full press release for Horrible History.

Eureka Entertainment announces the Dec 10th release of Horrible History: Four Historical Epics from Chang Cheh (Marco Polo, The Pirate, Boxer Rebellion, and Four Riders) on Blu-ray in a two-disc set.

The Limited Edition set (2000 copies per territory) will exclusively featuring an O-card
      slipcase and collector’s booklet.

Often described as the “Godfather of Hong Kong Cinema,” Chang Cheh made nearly a hundred films during a long and storied career spent at the Shaw Brothers Studio, where he directed such landmark films as The One-Armed Swordsman, Five Deadly Venoms, and The Heroic Ones. Many of his films drew upon Chinese history for inspiration – and many of them were based on real people and events. Eureka Classics presents four of his best historical epics in this limited-edition set: Marco Polo, The Pirate, Boxer Rebellion, and Four Riders.

In Marco Polo, the eponymous Venetian explorer (Richard Harrison) becomes embroiled in a battle between the Mongol Empire and Chinese rebels in the thirteenth century. In The Pirate, the infamous nineteenth-century raider Cheung Po Tsai (Ti Lung) must evade agents of the Imperial Court while attempting to aid the downtrodden residents of a coastal village. In Boxer Rebellion, a group of Chinese patriots use kung fu to protect their nation against invading forces at the turn of the twentieth century. Finally, in Four Riders, a Chinese veteran of the Korean War enlists three comrades to help him escape the South Korean Military Police Command after he is falsely accused of murdering an American soldier.

Marco Polo, The Pirate, Boxer Rebellion, and Four Riders are all fascinating examples of the rewriting of history common in popular genre cinema, directed with aplomb by a veteran of Shaw Brothers in Chang Cheh – one of the most celebrated and prolific filmmakers in Hong Kong. All four films are presented on Blu-ray from HD masters supplied by Celestial Pictures.

      Special Features:
      • Limited edition of 2000 copies

        TWELVE DEADLY COINS (1080p High-Definition Widescreen (2.35:1) / Mandarin DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Dual Mono / 89 min.)

A treacherous ambush on a cargo team, the theft of a fortune's worth of gold, and the quest to retrieve it have roots in a twenty-year-old feud between two brothers, and the seemingly unstoppable martial arts technique known as "Twelve Deadly Coins."

        VENGEANCE IS A GOLDEN BLADE (1080p High-Definition Widescreen (2.35:1) /

Mandarin DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Dual Mono / 104 min.)
A man betrayed by his wife is attacked by the vicious Long Brothers, who steal his treasured Golden Dragon blade and leave him a broken man. Years later, the man's daughter sets off to avenge her father and reclaim her family's sword. This spectacular tale of vengeance was directed by Meng-Hua Ho (The Mighty Peking Man, The Flying Guillotine).

        A TASTE OF COLD STEEL (1080p High-Definition Widescreen (2.35:1) / Mandarin DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Dual Mono / 84 min.)

A sequel to this boxset's Rape Of The Sword, A Taste Of Cold Steel finds three sisters and their swordsman cousin taking on all comers to defend and secure their family's most treasured heirloom ... a powerful and mystical blade.

        THE IRON BUDDHA (1080p High-Definition Widescreen (2.35:1) / Mandarin DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Dual Mono / 88 min.)

When a notorious and odious villain kills his master and entire clan, the stalwart warrior known as The Iron Buddha sets out on an unquenchable quest for revenge. This engrossing film features fight choreography from the legendary Sammo Hung, who also appears in a small role.

          The Lady Assassin

Based on a particularly infamous chapter of Chinese history, The Lady Assassin mixes pageantry with some of the most awesome sword fights in any Shaw Brothers film - and that’s really saying something. 88 Films are proud to present this classic of swords and scheming for the first time in the UK on Blu-ray.

A thoroughly Americanised young woman (Kara Hui, The 8 Diagram Pole Fighter) returns to Hong Kong to visit the martial arts school founded by her father and shakes it up with some trendy new ideas. But not everyone is keen on her innovations, a lesson she’ll have to learn the hard way. Directed by and starring the great Lau Kar-leung (The Shadow Boxing), The Lady is the Boss blends fun and fighting as only he could - and those fights are some of the very best of his illustrious career. 88 Films are delighted to present the UK Blu-ray premier of an action classic.

            • Up for order now from Kani.

              https://vinegarsyndrome.com/collecti...maybe-its-love

Following her parent's separation, 10 year-old Marbles is sent to live with her grandmother in the outskirts of Hong Kong. Also new to town is the seductive pageant queen Rita (Cherie Chung) whose skin-tight leotards pique the interest of a dashing postman (Kent Tong) already involved with the shopkeeper's wife, Lin (Elaine Jin). Meanwhile, the curious Marbles, who has made it a habit of spying on her neighbours with her binoculars, witnesses a murder on a stormy night. A ragtag team of kid detectives comes together. Who is the killer? Where is the body?

Angie Chen, the first female director at Shaw Brothers Studio, began her career with a rich and unclassifiable ensemble film: part comedy of manners à la Shaw, part Nancy Drew-esque nod to Hitchcock’s Rear Window — all of which was marketed by the studio as an erotic whodunnit. Chen's film unfolds as all these things and more: a self-aware portrait of a small-town mentality and community, fore-fronting the interconnected lives of women whose tenacity would become a major theme of Chen's work, developed further in My Name Ain’t Suzie (1985).

Kani Releasing releases the first woman-directed Shaw Film, Angie Chen's debut feature, MAYBE IT'S LOVE. This Blu-ray release is the film's home video debut in North America. MAYBE IT'S LOVE stars Cherie Chung as a beauty queen who gets wrapped up in a local murder mystery. Following her parent's separation, 10 year-old Marbles is sent to live with her grandmother in the outskirts of Hong Kong. Also new to town is seductive pageant queen Rita (Cherie Chung) whose skin-tight leotards pique the interest of a dashing postman (Kent Tong) already involved with the shopkeeper's wife, Mrs. Wang (Elaine Jin). Meanwhile, the curious Marbles, who has made it a habit of spying on her neighbours with her binoculars, witnesses a murder on a stormy night. A ragtag team of kid detectives comes together. Who is the killer? Where is the body?

Angie Chen, the first female director at Shaw Brothers Studio, began her career with a rich and unclassifiable ensemble film: part comedy of manners à la Shaw, part Nancy Drew-esque nod to Hitchcock's Rear Window — all of which was marketed by the studio as an erotic whodunnit. Chen's film unfolds as all these things and more: a self-aware portrait of a small-town mentality and community, fore-fronting the interconnected lives of women whose tenacity would become a major theme of Chen's work, developed further in MY NAME AIN'T SUZIE (1985).

Angie Chen grew up between Taiwan and Hong Kong before completing her studies at UCLA. She worked as an assistant director for Jackie Chan on DRAGON LORD, which brought her back to Hong Kong where she made two films for Shaw Brother Studios under producer Mona Fong: MAYBE IT'S LOVE (1984) and MY NAME AIN'T SUZIE (1985). She was reunited with Cherie Chung in CHAOS BY DESIGN (1988) for Golden Harvest before turning to documentaries later in her career, including the intimate profiles of influential writer Hualing Nieh Engle in ONE TREE THREE LIVES (2013) and artist Yank Wong (Art director of LONG ARM OF THE LAW) in I'VE GOT THE BLUES (2018).

This Blu-ray release features a new interview with the director Angie Chen, conducted by Toronto-based critic Katherine Connell; the director's short film THE VISIT (1981); an interview with the producer, Lawrence Wong Ka Hay; the original theatrical trailer; a booklet with archival photographs and new writing by Katherine Connell; and new English subtitles, translated by Kani co-founder Pearl Chan. The Blu-ray is now available for pre-order through Vinegar Syndrome, and will be available at other retailers in the new year.

Kani Releasing have also acquired the director's sophomore film, MY NAME AIN'T SUZIE the restoration of which is underway from original camera negative. MY NAME AIN'T SUZIE is the director's feminist response to Richard Quine's THE WORLD OF SUZIE WONG (1960), starring a mesmerizing and defiant Pat Ha (NOMAD) and Anthony Wong (INFERNAL AFFAIRS, EBOLA SYNDROME) in his first on-screen appearance.

                      • Coming 3/24/25 from 88 Films.

An Amorous Woman Of Tang Dynasty

One of the last films produced at Hong Kong’s legendary Shaw Brothers studio, and absolutely one of their finest – a visually ravishing and erotically charged story of a free-spirited female poet Yu (Patricia Ha, Nomad) who, frustrated by the conservative times in which she lives, refuses to behave in the ways nice young ladies are supposed to.

Despite plentiful clothes-off action, this is so much more than a soft-core “romp,” boasting an artistic ambition that Shaw Brothers didn’t always show in their kung fu movies. Directed with intelligence and real style by Eddie Fong Ling-ching, this is one of the major films from Hong Kong’s Golden Age. 88 Films are proud to present this sensual masterpiece in the UK for the first time on Blu-ray.

                        - High Definition Blu-ray presentation
                        - 2.0 Mandarin with English Subtitles
                        - Audio Commentary by Journalist David West
                        - Alex Man on An Amorous Woman of Tang Dynasty by Fred Ambroisine

                              • I assume that Crazy Nuts of Kung Fu does not feature death by teabagging? A missed opportunity.
I'm bitter, I'm twisted, James Joyce is fucking my sister.
