"In 1995, comedy superstar Stephen Chow and director Jeff Lau re-imagined the Journey to the West mythos with the two-part A Chinese Odyssey film. A twisted fantasy comedy packed with special effects, the film elevated Chow's signature brand of comedy to a whole new level and became one of the star's most popular films among Mainland China audiences. 17 years later, Chow takes the director's chair with Gallants director Derek Kwok for Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons, an original chapter that creates a new origin story for one of the story's major characters.

His first film since 2008's CJ7, Chow is strictly staying behind the scenes for the first time in his career. However, his unique comedic style can be clearly felt in the film's silly humor, striking visuals, as well as the comic performances of stars Wen Zhang (Love is Not Blind), Shu Qi (If You Are the One), Huang Bo (Lost in Thailand) and Taiwan pop prince Show Luo. Released in time for the Lunar New Year holidays, Conquering the Demons became the second highest-grossing film ever at the Chinese box office and the top-grossing Chinese-language film in history, proving that Stephen Chow is truly a hit maker even when he's staying behind the camera.

Demon hunter Chen Xuanzhang (Wen Zhang) believes that he can purify any demon through love. However, his belief is shaken when his attempt to defeat a demon fish ends in a family's death and a victory for violent demon hunter Duan (Shu Qi). After getting encouragement from his master, Xuanzhang soldiers on to hunting down a demonic hog with the help of Duan, who has fallen in love with Xuanzhang. Despite help from other demon hunters, the hog gets away. As a last resort, Xuanzhang and Duan turn to the help of Sun Wukong (Huang Bo), who has been imprisoned for five centuries for his crimes in heaven.

This edition includes making of, music video, a stills gallery and trailers.

Note: This edition includes the Cantonese version of the film."

Just read the review of this over at TWITCH

Journey to the West is such a sublime crowdpleaser, despite the fact that it shifts into dark and scary modes. going places blockbusters do not dare to go, with all guns blazing. The comedy here is for all tastes and the majority of the film will be appreciated overseas. Do not miss this undeniably fun and striking adventure-comedy masterwork!
Didnt realise CHOW himself was not even in the movie!!!

Might give this a watch now...was not really interested in seeing it at first.....

Just saw this. I didn't like it as much as Shaolin Soccer, but enjoyed it more than CJ7. If you live near one of the ten theaters playing it in the US, you should see it. It definitely won't get a big push due to a few mainstream film no-no's, like kid characters in real danger.
Needless to say, the Monkey King was my favorite part of the movie.

Love Stephen Chow's work, especially Kung-Fu Hustle. I saw the live Monkey: Journey to the West production that Damon Albarn and his collaborators put on in NYC last summer, so I'm interested in checking out Chow's take on this story.

It's pretty good. It really does just feel like the first part of the story, though. Sort of like watching the first installment of LORD OF THE RINGS, in a way.

Cool, that's good to know. The full title on IMDB (Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons) definitely makes it sound like the first part of a series.

Tripitaka is being played by a man? Hmm, I'm not sure I can relate to that.

As a huge Monkey fan I'm always interested in these adaptions but never enjoy them. Probably because I'm always comparing to the brilliant Japanese series which is impossible to top.

I was really surprised by JOURNEY TO THE WEST because I hadn't heard anything about it when I watched it. I don't think I even knew Stephen Chow was responsible for it until the unmistakable odor of his antics was sensed. I really liked it though. My favorite of his is KUNG FU HUSTLE, and I thought this came very close to matching it in entertainment value. Cool to hear there is a sequel, but Chow is only producing on that one, so I'm tempering my expectations. It appears Chow's next movie is called MERMAID. It looks to be more in the CJ7 ballpark than the other 2, but his stuff tends to be watchable regardless.
