Thanks for the reminder, sounds filthy. I recall that film was well received when it was released.

Back to Red To Kill--the new artwork #1 variant reminds me of the Butcher Baker Nightmare Maker art.

Bloody great film. Saw it in a theater originally with DAUGHTERS OF DARKNESS 2. A feel-good double par excellence.

I just finished Alexandra Heller-Nicholas' book on rape/revenge films and although she clearly has a strong stomach for the subject she notes that Red to Kill is probably the most extreme film in the book.

I found the supergoofy humour and just plain strange combo of melodrama, horror and whatever the hell is going on with the near superhero vibe of the villain of the film cut back on how disturbing it could have been.

I think it works more as a strange, campy genre artifact than a trangressive or horror film.

Similar issue with DR LAMB. Lose the bloody humor and hijinks!

Hard to recall HK rape/revenge that doesn't thread in silly humor. THE BEASTS is pretty grim. Also BLOODY BEAST. Even the DAUGHTERS OF DARKNESS films have some silly interludes. RUN AND KILL stays pretty grim. THE UNTOLD STORY has the stupid Danny Lee nonsense with the girlfriends.

I hope ERROR does some Thai films like ZEE-OUI.

Yeah to me the lowbrow humour seems to just be a big part of the CATIII subgenre of the time, it certainly makes them distinctive.

If you enjoy the tonal whiplash it is part of what makes them fun despite the extreme content, which is fine by me but keeps them out of my personal list of 'top' disturbing or transgressive films.

Not really into either, but I'll be going with variant #1. Hopefully that's not the windowlicker art.

I disagree--I love the humorous aspect of these films. It's often so callous, especially the 2 Daughter of Darkness films. I dig the cops in Untold Story too.

You want to see a grim HK Cat III with NO humor at all, try Lost Souls (1980, Shaw Bros -- retroactively given the Cat III rating). That film is bleak.

Maybe it's a tribute to LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT and the truly out-of-place slapstick moments in that one involving law enforcement, intercut with the very disturbing treatment of the two girls.
                    VHS will never die!

I put in for Red to Kill LE #1 and Red Spells Red.

Missed my chance to get Run and Kill as it sold out quick so I'll have to wait for the standard edition.

Red to Kill LE cover #1 sold out first. Honestly, I'm surprised.

I received my copy a few days ago, popped it on last night. I chose the "modern color" version, which looked great--crisp bright picture. I figure at some point I'll re-watch with the "original color" version.

What a debauched film! Campy, melodramatic and disturbing. Ben Ng fucking slays, as does Lily Chung.

lol, not only did I not know that there were two versions of the movie on the disc but I have no idea which playlist MPC-HC grabbed when I watched it. Whichever one I watched looked good though!

We watched the original color grading option last night, as that's how I remember it looking when I first saw it years ago and man oh man, I think I'd forgotten more than I remembered about this movie. It definitely wouldn't get made today, it's so over the top and insane and just gleefully offensive. The shower shaving scene is still really unsettling to me, but like Randy said, the over the top aspect of the antagonist in the last third of the film is so insane, it's impossible to take any of it all that seriously. Still.... I wouldn't necessarily put it on when we had company over.

"Gleefully offensive" - perfect description! And I totally agree, Ben Ng's snarling and convulsing with rage/lust as he sweats buckets is hysterical.
