This has some exquisite nudity, courtesy of Christina Lindberg.
Why would anybody watch a scum show like Videodrome? Why did you watch it, Max?

Holy F-ing Shit - this has been my most wanted title on blu-ray for longer than I can remember, so - hooray.

Now just got to hope they do it justice, and figure out the most cost effective way of getting these Discotek discs to the UK (they've not yet popped up via my usual suppliers of US imports).

This movie has the power to change a person's life! I first saw it as a teenager when Panic House put it out on DVD. Mind blown! I've spent every year since then tracking down Pinky Violence films and trying to see every film Ike ever did. Took me till 2023 to complete that quest.

It's a gorgeously shot film with one of the most beautifully choreographed action scenes in the history of cinema. No kidding! Admittedly the plot can get a bit convoluted at times and they could have exploited the political aspects of the storyline more than they did.

Suzuki wrote in his book that one of his main motivations for doing the film was the opportunity to make Meiji Era story and utilize Toei's left-over assets from period films.

“Once Battles without Honour and Humanity turned into a series, in-period ninkyo films disappeared and all productions lines started putting out modern day films. The Kyoto studios however still had plenty of heritage from the [ninkyo] yakuza film era. There were Meiji era town sets, costumes, art and props, the Toei Tsurugikai [action] unit specializing in chambara sword fights, and an army of villain actors. It was a treasure trove of valuable assets.”

Sex and Fury was produced as the B-film companion for The Viper Brothers: Jail-Living for 4 1/2 Years (まむしの兄弟 刑務所暮し四年半) which was the A-movie.

[Image: newspaper ad for Toei’s The Viper Brothers: Jail-Living for 4 1/2 Years & Sex and Fury double feature which opened Feb. 17, 1973]

The last time I viewed this was in 2018, from a 35mm print (a double feature with Zero Woman: Red Handcuffs). Can't wait to watch this again!

I came across a bootleg copy of this a few years ago under the title Story of a Depraved Elder Sister. I wonder, is that the literal translation? Anyway, I like that title better than Sex & Fury.

Sex and Fury is one of the first films that made me a fan of genre films. It was also my first exposure to not only Pinky Violence but Japanese film in general. Back in before 2009, I read a web article about the films that influence Kill Bill. Sex & Fury was one of the titles titles that became a "must see" right away. It blew my mind and sent me down this genre film journey, and is likely responsible for Pinky Violence being one of my favorite genres.

Literal except "Delinquent" would be a better translation for 不良 than "Depraved". Or otherwise we can go and rename a whole bunch of movies... Reiko Oshida's Depraved Girl Boss, Tatsuo Umemiya's Depraved Boss, Terrifying Girls High School: Depraved Convulsion Group, Depraved Girl Mako It's the same Japanese word in all of those titles (and quite a few other films).

I do admit those titles look pretty cool

I'm usually in favour of retaining original titles for Japanese films, but in this case, I quite like 'Sex & Fury', just because, well... it's accurate.

                          Thanks for the accurate translation.

As a side note, quite possibly my favorite title (or the translated English version, I should say) is Terrifying Girls High School: Lynch Law Classroom. Like what exactly is a lynch law classroom? You cross the wrong delinquent girl and you gotta get lynched, that's the law? Sounds amazing.

I still don't know what a Delinquent Convulsion Group is either, but it's definitely what I'm calling my next free-form noise band.
