  • a Urotsukidoji question, hope someone knows the answer!

It looks like Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend hit DVD, and even hit a DVD/Blu combo pack, along with the older releases. The problem is, on Amazon, the same reviews are on every edition. So I have no idea which edition is cut, if they're all cut, or what. I know the movie is a movie edited down from the series, and I'm okay with that, I just don't want all the grue and sleaze chopped out.

Anyone who has any input on this, lemme know! I saw the VHS years ago, and revisited it on tape somewhat recently, but I would LOVE a nice blu of this!

There's a very thorough write up here at the Kentai's Films blog.

This release obviously has some issues.

Yikes. Looks like I'm sticking to the VHS for the time being.

I've heard that in Japan, they've started doing the tentacle, slime, and sex stuff in live action. I haven't seen any of it, but it sounds ridiculous, and I need to see some of it. Anyone who has any recommendations for that kind of stuff, throw em at me here!

        Yikes, that's a bummer.

I had every VHS release of this series back in the day, the movies and the OVA's. The long form OVA was the way to go. The movie cuts didn't just edit out sex and gore but removed entire scenes. It makes a little bit more sense of things. I don't know why the OVA's haven't been made available. I got rid of my tapes long ago and while back I was feeling nostalgic so I DL'd a torrent, it doesn't hold up the same for me as it used to but this series still deserves a proper release. I never seen the remake that came out a while back.

Yeah, I have the OVA's from VHS. Definitely the way to go, but a nice Blu of even an edited down version could be cool, as long as it kept the sleaze, but that release just sounds problematic as hell.

I just added the New Saga Complete Series to my cart on Amazon. It's apparently, like you said, more or less a remake, BUT some reviews I read said the upped the sex and violence quotient. They say it's even more gratuitous, and okay, I'm sold. Not only did the original series have a great storyline, and some atmosphere to it, but it was beyond demented and I know that's what got a lot of us watching, so I'm definitely curious about the New Saga haha

Let us know what you think of the New Saga. I'm curious how it compares to the original.

Did you see RETURN OF THE OVERFIEND and INFERNO ROAD, parts 3 and 4? Those were always my favorites. Once they left the highschool setting of parts 1 and 2 and went into the all out post apocalyptic world I enjoyed the story more.

I have not, I have seen Legend of the Overfiend and Legend of the Demon-Womb, but that's it. I do have the next three from VHS though, should probably sit down and watch them at some point.

New Saga wasn't very good and on top of that it was never completed. It ends as soon as the guy goes Gyver the first time. It could've been good but it falls far short of the first two Urotsukidoji OVA's. I thought three, four, and the incomplete five were pretty good but I like the ideas behind them more than the execution.

Forgive my ignorance, but what does "sub-only SD" mean?
Why would anybody watch a scum show like Videodrome? Why did you watch it, Max?

I'm going to guess subtitled only (no dub) and in standard definition.

Ah, thanks. They probably could've just used the word "subtitles", but whatever.

Considering the somewhat confusing history of this thing. you'd think Discotek would've made an effort to make the press release more straightforward. I'm not sure what UROTSUKIDOJI AND FRIENDS is supposed to mean. Why use that confusing terminology? What the hell is ...AND FRIENDS?

Anyways, I hope I'm correct in assuming that this release is going to be the US NC-17 dubbed feature version and the original, uncut 3-part series in SD, in Japanese language w/subtitles. Plus, special features. That's it, right? No sequels or "friends" included?

I do have a Spanish bootleg blu of this, but Christ knows what version it is.

I'm sure this will wipe the floor with the previous Media Blasters / Kitty Media attempt a HD release, the hilarious recent German AI upscale and the upcoming Japanese "Archive Set" while still remaining an unfortunate case of "that's-the-best-we-can-do" thanks to the lost original negatives.

At least we dodged this kind of cover "art":

I love PERDITA DURANGO and it doesn't get quoted enough. They were watching the second film, LEGEND OF THE DEMON WOMB, though. I expect that to come from Discotek too in the near future.

This is pure speculation but maybe they'll release other adaptations of Toshio Maeda works like LA BLUE GIRL, ADVENTURE KID and DEMON BEAST INVASION as well?
