  • Very good transfer. Been a big favourite of mine for a long time, so great to see it in a legit English-subbed form. Shame no BluRay, though.

WHITE ROSE has a very high sleazy factor, and is hugely enjoyable.

    • These releases are addictive. I hope we won't have to wait years for the other more notorious Nikkatsu films like Star of David, Zoom Up: Rape Site and whatever else Synapse has the rights for.

      • Watched Nun Story: Frustration In Black yesterday. Full review soon but it looks like Female Convict 101: Suck, which means it doesn't look good. Decent movie though.
        Rock! Shock! Pop!

i'm holding off simply because one of the last two releases had a terrible disc, a warning about a poor master on the back, so waiting on the site's review here with some grabs.

sold on the idea of the film itself, though.

Doubt Impulse would put out Star of David out as it's already been released by Discotek. So far they've are just pushing out unique to the english speaking market releases (personally hope they will stick to that path). I guess it's expensive now though for those who missed out/new to the field.

Passed on White Rose Campus, seen it fansubbed ~ 10 years ago and rated it fairly average, can't really recall anything about it. Seemingly a crowdpleaser

Waiting for Nun Story to arrive though.

new issues of films people will have missed have that use. it's a shame to cover the same territory as though a priority though - there were 1100+ of these RP made, so it's odd to think of not exploring those above those that have had an airing, but not entirely to exclude them. visible requests for films with reputations, discs, do make me worry the interest won't grow but stagnate.

Within the first ten minutes we get to see a slimy toilet cleaner jerk off while sucking on used sanitary pads! The last act, when they get to the hotel, is outrageous.
sounds really perverted and disgusting to me (immediately went on my wish list)!

                • I ordered a WRC last night with a free shipping coupon at Deep Discount. Looking forward to seeing it!

                  • Well, according to their last physical catalogue they are actually releasing Star of David. Hopefully on bluray!

I think your argument is fair. From my perspective I have what I want and want to see new stuff, and I think nothing is really rare today (within roman porno discs, except 2-3 boxsets perhaps) so anyone with an interest enough can "go for it" with some priority in their buying (overpriced is another story though, very relative to new releases pricing). There's always the possibility to resell the movies you won't rewatch, that's what I do anyway to keep things afloat.

i think everyone has their own definition of rare, and it often fluctuates when discussing different sub-genres and countries. there's a lot of japanese discs (and fair few fansubs) for RP, but compared to the level of overall output i am not sure how well it's technically covered. don't think japan wants to deal with that level or retrospective production or consumption when it continues to make lots of other films each year. reselling unsubbed discs that obscure (and that initially expensive) is likely to result in a lot of lost money - their resale value affected also by the relatively small western interest in titles it's got to go out of it's way to learn or know about.

western licensors that subs could get more adventurous, but then we're always stuck wondering about the mysteries of how that all works with their knowledge or confidence of something like RP being relatively limited compared to the audience that will (or might) buy into it. and companies in japan, nikkatsu included, always seem to demand high fees, too.

                        • It would be interesting to know how the Impulse releases are selling. The notorious, violent films probably do okay, but what about the tamer entries? To me roman porno feels extremely niche, but maybe I'm wrong.

i've heard a couple of podcast interviews with synapse over the last couple of years, and they seem to be saying they're selling better than expected - can't remember if this is because they've largely gone for typical exploitation genres like WIP or nuns. the newer ones that are due are in the more violent realms - this seems to be a reaction to a fanbase building which knows about the more controversial examples, and wants discs of those. don't know how the sales now stack up - i think they're not as quick putting them out as they could be. still very surprised some of the titles in the line aren't major points of discussion on forums, given they can be very outlandish and far more interesting than a lot of other genre films that keep getting repeat outings on discs.

                            • Some of these titles are getting discussed, but there's not a huge following out there. I come across a lot of fans of horror and extreme movies, but few have seen many Nikkatsu films.

Another thread here covered reaction to WRC, and I contributed myself. Love the film. Have been a fan for decades (since a Japanese VHS).

I have no idea what generates title decisions for Synapse, but availability would have something to do with it. There was going to be a ZOOM UP RAPE SITE release before it came out on DVD in Japan, and that would have had a worldwide "exclusive," but the Japanese beat Synapse to the punch with a very good DVD, and the Synapse release is in a holding pattern.

I buy every Synapse/Impulse release and most Nikkatsu Japanese Blus or DVDs, but I'm puzzled why such titles as SECRET CHRONICLE: SHE-BEAST MARKET, RAPING!, RAPE 13TH HOUR. WOMAN OF THE AFTERNOON: INCITE, ZOOM UP RAPE SITE, and RAPE have not taken precidence over many of the weaker Impulse choices.

'zoom up - sexual assault site' is the title i've heard synapse will issue '... rape site' as; the better price would help it, and they seem hell bent on getting amazon visibility, but the lack of discussion of any of them mystifies me ... if a director like argento can get visibility to the point it pretty much detracts from the mystery or discovery, then why on earth aren't films like 'sex apartments' extremely popular? i'm stumped, a little mixed about my feelings on that.

i'm sold on the principal of them, but even at the USA prices from synapse i've only bought a small handful i could get a sense of. i like the wilder side, the arty creative side too ('watcher in the attic' for example - i've the MM disc) so i welcome anyone who can point to more of possible interest from those they've released i can see trailers or reviews for - the genres often put me off because i don't imagine the taste of the person picking them goes into the unexpected very easily.

i don't know about prioritising, but the more extreme ones are just lined-up after earlier licenses, i think.
