Nikkatsu Roman Porno Catalogue Titles Coming From Synapse/Impulse

I guess that means Nikkatsu supplied Synapse/Impulse with the bad transfer or, maybe, it was the best they could do due to the original elements?

You'd think Nikkatsu would want to make as much as they could on their old films & would be willing to do whatever someone is willing to pay (new hd transfer, etc).

Synapse's selection process has either changed or they've ran out of good films to release. I believe they were getting screeners without subtitles and picking films base don how bonkers they were. If this has a bad transfer, I wonder why those chose it.

For what it's worth, it's really sleazy - and Naomi Tani is a bit of a name in these circles, so there's that too.

This is really the only entry in the series that I've taken issue with in terms of picture quality. As you noted on the last page, the transfers have been good so far. This one suffers from weird artifacting, ghosting and other issues that make it look like it was shot through a screen door.

Ouch, I will be getting my copy soon as I see it already shipped. Hopefully the poor transfer winds up being a anomaly instead of the new norm. In the catalog I received with the latest disc I saw some of the other titles slated for release and they all sound very intriguing :)

German BD of STAR OF DAVID is very good, but I'd definitely go for a Synapse with subs.

Synapse has got plenty of good titles to choose from, so i don't understand why they're doing stuff like ...SUCK when they could jump straight to WHITE ROSE CAMPUS..., ZOOM UP: RAPE/SEXUAL ASSAULT SITE, RAPE 13TH HOUR (retitled above), STAR OF DAVID, etc.

I've sent them a bunch of suggestions over the years based on listed upcoming releases, but never get a reply.

On the original Nikkatsau trailer DVD, they also had RAPE (Hasebe).

I'd think the wild n' rough films would sell the best. I really, really want to see Rape 13th Hour & Rape. Basically, all of the films with twisted, sick, vile titles...

Based on the caps I'd say that's probably one the old VHS era masters. Hundreds of those have been streaming in Japan since the early 2000s (see some NSFW examples in my past review posts), and some of them have been released on dvd by budget labels but never by major companies (Geneon, Happinet). I'm surprised Synapse would buy / Nikkatsu would sell them one of those old masters that were clearly not made for DVD distribution. Even makes me wonder if Nikkatsu sent them the wrong master by accident...

Don May must have really stopped giving a damn. He used to have very high standards for the quality of masters he'd accept. In the past he even refused some of the masters Nikkatsu gave him and demanded better (new) masters. This happened with ENTRAILS OF A VIRGIN / ENTRAILS OF A BEAUTIFUL WOMAN and is also what led to the BD release of FAIRY IN A CAGE. That he'll now just slap a garbage VHS transfer on a DVD is extremely disappointing and will keep me from preordering any of these new titles.

I'll let this one slide, I'm thinking he maybe he didn't check the master cause all the previous ones have been good. I don't know. It is very unlike him though.

I received my copy of FEMALE PRISONER 101: SUCK on the back there is a disclaimer, but I had to find my magnifying glass to read it, it says:
While the video master provided by Nikkatsu films for FP:101 was not up to our usual standards of quality, Impulse pictures feels it is an important film that should be seen by the fans. Nikkatsu films did not provide us with better quality master materials for this feature"

So I guess that answers that.

So anybody else buy White Rose Campus? I got it in the mail the other day, and boy is the film something else! My favourite of the ones I've seen of the Synapse releases by far. Within the first ten minutes we get to see a slimy toilet cleaner jerk off while sucking on used sanitary pads! The last act, when they get to the hotel, is outrageous.
