Well I suppose I can reveal it here despite not nearly being done... hopefully it is ok to post this in this thread as I have no idea where to otherwise, and I'm scared of opening new threads. I'm also scared of posting here.

As Takuma already knows I have been building a site at www.romanporno.com where I guess the most important thing so far is the what I believe to be a complete list of the roman porno films.

I have planned to make pages for every single movie with the cast listed and other info, plus lobby cards and still photos and screenshots from DVDs and VoDs and other images. But that is goddamn slow work and when one is as lazy as me it goes very slowly. Currently I have pages for 215 of the movies (not all linked from the list) but almost all of those have only the poster and some of the cast and crew (should translate all those names but it is actually faster to add the pages when I don't yet). I have mostly concentrated on adding the pages now with basic info and poster... making pages like that for all the rest of the movies should take only like... ~100 hours.

So.. yeah.

(and I love it that you posted a still from Naosuke Kurosawa's "Lolita Wife"... a rather good film If I recall correctly, they changed the title later to something less politically incorrect)

The films not listed in the Nikkatsu book might be films distributed but not produced by them. Some of such films seem to be listed, though, e.g. Shinji Somai's Love Hotel (which is only natural as it's one of the best Roman Pornos and won a ton of awards).

(btw, this could be a topic of its own. I had already been thinking about making a new Roman Porno topic for Non-Synapse titles. Well, it's up to mods (Ian?))

That seems to be the case. Slight difference in the title between the old VHS (I think it is older...)

Yeah that is probably the reason for the different amount of films listed in the books but the first book still probably has a couple of hundred films in it that were produced by another company. For example 1988 has 25 films in total, all listed in the book by Nikkatsu (I think it is from them, I am not actually entirely sure...) but 8 of them are produced by another studio and 5 are co-productions with Nikkatsu, so only 12 films are completely Nikkatsu produced.
I checked the studio info from Nikkatsu's own site so they are probably mostly correct.

Zoom Up: Rape Site (1979) coming from Synapse

Here's one from Synapse / Impulse to the fans. A film that has never been transferred from the original film prints before! No videos, no dvds, no VoDs, no nothing anywhere in the world. A film that most of us probably know by reputation: Zoom Up: Rape Site (1979).

This film, directed by one of Nikkatsu's best and most stylish filmmakers, Koyu Ohara, was Nikkatsu's return to ultra-violent pink. The genre bloomed in the mid 70's, but after the controversy created by Rape! 13th Hour Nikkatsu ordered their directors to tone it down. Zoom Up: Rape Site changed that, and is considered by those few who have seen it as one of the nastiest films in the genre.

I've been dying to tell people about this for a long time already, and I guess it's ok now since Jerry mentioned it in a podcast (51:50). I was slightly involved in getting the film to Synapse's release list, but all credit goes to Synapse who went an extra mile with it. This was a title even Nikkatsu wasn't sure if they had it. But it was in their vaults, and Synapse decided to go for and do all the work from the scratch because they knew fans would love to finally get their hand on it.

I hope everyone will support Synapse's releases, but I especially hope people will support this specific title. It's one for the fans! No release date yet, but it's certainly coming!

I wonder if it is an "in joke" by someone...Surely they could have done something much simpler..like coloring it in with marker!!!

Thank you for the excellent news Takuma! I had actually thought about asking Synapse if they could try to get this one out. I did ask about it from Happinet though, some months ago, but never got an answer.

As for the poster there are several movies which have both uncensored and censored versions available. I have seen the censored ones referred to as 再版 which according to Google is "reprint/reissue/second edition". ?







And so on...

They also seem to have released censored versions of the lobby cards.

Haha...I don't mind censored versions of the posters.....just wonder why they stuck a woman'd head over teh girl's breasts rather than just blacking it out.....

But I can see from the other examples you posted that it must be a Japanese thing to do it...Which means that no-one outside of Japan will understand it...and they are not meant to I suppose!!

When I first saw images of some of those censored ones I also thought it was either some sort of joke or someone really didn't want to show boobies on his website and this was the best he came up with. But no. I realized it only after seeing a photo of one censored poster for sale in an auction.

The lobby card example is from the same movie as the last poster so I guess they could have used black boxes on the poster as well but decided the headshots look better. Then again I think the black boxes might be some sort of paper though and might not have been used at the same time with the censored posters.

So that brings to 24 still to release. Next up is Rape Shot: Momoe's Lips, which will have Momoe's Lips on the outside, and should have the proper title on the inside. Why? Because Amazon is unconcerned with content. They will list extremely violent and misogynistic films like Irreversible or I Spit On Your Grave, but anything with the word Rape in the title is banned, regardless of the context.

Welcome to my world. The next 24 are nasty though and we will have to be creative with the outside covers. A fan from Iceland asked us to try and get the legendary ZoomUp: Rape Site. My Nikkatsu rep was rather shocked that we asked for it. I think they buried it in the bottom of their vault in disgust upon completion. But, we got it! If we are lucky, we will get a high def master and be able to do a BR of it as well as a DVD as we did with Fairy In A Cage. Fingers crossed.

They are still saying you are from Iceland.
