  • Mondo Macabro releasing Kim Ki-young's WOMAN CHASING A KILLER BUTTERFLY on Blu

ANNOUNCEMENT #3 - WOMAN CHASED BY A KILLER BUTTERFLY

A.K.A. THE GIRL WITH THE BUTTERFLY TATTOO or simply THE KILLER BUTTERFLY (probably the title we'll use).

Over the years we've released some pretty strange movies here at Mondo Macabro. But this might very well be the strangest yet. Directed by Kim Ki-young, director of the original version of THE HOUSEMAID, often called “the best Korean film of all time”, BUTTERFLY is a horror-tinged psychotropic melodrama freak-out about nothing less than death itself and the will to keep living. After a young man survives being poisoned by a girl at a picnic he falls into a deep, suicidal depression. But standing in the way of his desire to kill himself is a Nietzschean bookseller who refuses to die even though he's killed several times, an ancient mummy who is revived in the form of a beautiful woman who happens to be a cannibal, and an insane anthropologist who wants to keep his daughter alive by getting her laid. And also, of course, butterflies. KILLER BUTTERFLY is the most eccentric work in the filmography of the very eccentric Kim Ki-young, made at time of crisis in the Korean film industry when he was running out of hit movies but not bizarre ideas.

MM is incredibly excited to bring this amazing film to the US for the first time ever in a world-premiere Blu-ray release sporting a new 2K restoration from the original negative and loaded with tons of exclusive extras. Hopefully we'll have this one available before the end of the year, though early next is possible as well. Expect a 'red case' LE followed by a standard version a couple months later.

No news yet. Still trying to get it though. It's just taking forever to get anywhere with the rights holder. The good news is the official Taiwanese film archive is restoring the film from the OCN. So cross your fingers we can work out a deal.

We also recently got an agreement on another Asian film, but that's news for a future update!

Sounds promising that you'll be able to work out a deal and get it done. Will definitely keep my fingers crossed for that one. Keep the Asian films a comin'.

Really looking forward to this Kim Ki-young release. The only chance for me to see it with English subs was on KOFA's YT channel and I definitely thought KOFA might release it somewhere down the line but to have MM snag the rights is a major coup.

Will be picking this one up. What other Asian films have MM released so far besides Suddenly in the Dark?

The HD master is currently undergoing some additional restoration work. Some digital clean up and new color grading. Extras are pretty much all done. Working on the cover right now too. We're hoping for a late winter/early spring release.

MM posted an updated on this on Facebook earlier today.

                              COVER AND SPECS REVEAL!

Coming this summer we will finally unveil the world premiere Blu-ray of Kim Ki-young's utterly bizarre masterpiece WOMAN CHASING THE BUTTERFLY OF DEATH!

Like a kind of crazy cinematic ghost train ride, WOMAN CHASING THE BUTTERFLY OF DEATH takes us on a journey deep into the darkness of one man's fears and fantasies. That man is Young-gul, a lonely and rather morbid student in late 1970's South Korea. Narrowly surviving a murder-suicide attempt by a woman wearing a butterfly pendant, he next finds himself besieged by a seemingly insane bookseller who claims he can never die. Even after Young-gul burns the man's body his skeleton comes back to taunt him. As if that weren't enough, the poor student then finds himself the victim of a beautiful thousand year old woman (she looks about 25) who says she is hungry and want to eat his liver….

The director, Kim Ki-young, was one of Korea's most successful film makers. His 1960 production THE HOUSEMAID is now a recognized classic of world cinema. With this film he goes far beyond the bounds of the real and takes us into a world where anything seems possible, a world where a kind of dream logic rules. Almost impossible to summarize, the film is nevertheless insanely enjoyable. A real one of a kind production that opens our eyes to the limitless possibilities of cinema.

The numbered Red Case Limited Edition will feature an exclusive reversible cover featuring new art by Naomi Butterfield and Mathieu St-Pierre on either side, and a booklet featuring a brand new essay on the film by writer Kelley Dong.

                              DISC FEATURES
Brand new 2K restoration from the original negative
                              Region free
Korean language track with newly translated optional English subs
Brand new audio commentary by Kenneth Brorsson and Paul Quinn of the What's Korean Cinema podcast
