Despite all the cosplay, movie stars, TV stars, toys, video games and other assorted stuff, comic books are what started all of this and comic books remain, for some of us at least, the most important part of an event like NYCC. As such, we've saved the best for last. All the big publishers are, as per the norm, setup in the main hall. Marvel had a lot going on this year, like they always do, promoting Black Panther and Doctor Strange in a big way this year.
Also in the main hall? Dark Horse, Dynamite, Oni, IDW, Image, 2000 A.D., and Archie! There was a lot of great stuff going on at the Archie booth, including a signing for the Archie Meets Ramones comic that came out a few weeks ago, complete with the requisite NYCC variant cover on sale! Alex Ross had a booth set up too, selling prints and other expensive but awesome paintings.
And then there's the vendors. Granted, a lot of the same guys show up year after year, but there's a reason for that. If Gold and Silver Age comics are your thing, step right up. There were loads of key books on sale, everything from a Detective Comics #27 to an Amazing Fantasy #15 to an Amazing Spider-Man #129 to Daredevil #1. Loads of E.C. Comics on display for sale in various conditions, early Superman and Flash comics and lots of original artwork too.
But the actual physical comics is only part of the comic book experience at NYCC - the more unique experiences always happen in Artist's Alley, which is always massive at this con, the 2016 edition being no exception. Fans of comics of all ages, shapes and sizes get to meet with creators from across the funny book genres to talk, get signatures, buy sketches and just generally hang out and chat. For this writer's money, it's always the most 'fun' part of the show.
Lots of interesting creators on hand this year - Sean Chen, Klaus Janson, Millennium/X-Files scribe Joe Harris, Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti (these guys had a pretty decent line going) and the man behind the demented visuals of The Nameless, Chris Burnham!
But that's not all - Corinna Bechko and Gabriel Hardman, Fabien Nicieza (co-creator of Deadpool), amazing Daredevil artist extraordinaire Alex Maleev, Juan Ferreryra (whose art on Colder is just amazing), Rachel Rising/Strangers In Paradise guru Terry Moore and Bob Camp of Ren & Stimpy fame!
Wanna meet New Mutants co-creator Bob McLeod? Here's your chance. Peter J. Tomasi, Keith Williams (and Power Man cosplayer), Adam Hughes (best 'good girl artist' ever?), Max Fiumara - they were all there too. And saving the best for last? Jim motherfucking Zubkavich and his lovely wife Stacy on hand, sketching and signing for fans and taking all the time in the world for anyone who wanted to shoot the breeze with him.
