Tenacious D In The Pick Of Destiny – Movie Review:

Tenacious D In The Pick Of Destiny opens with a prologue where we meet a young man named Jables (JB, played by Jack Black) who, despite his strict religious upbringing, only wants to rock n roll. When his father tears down all of his posters except for one, Ronnie James Dio himself appears and tells him to split his hometown and head to Hollywood. He does just that and a short time after getting off of the bus, on Venice Beach he meets an acoustic guitar player named Kage (KG, played by Kyle Gass) playing on the street. JB is immediately impressed with KG's abilities and asks him to take him under his wing but KG isn't interested.

After JB gets his ass kicked by a gang of crooks, KG changes his tune and before you know it, he's teaching him how to play guitar and letting him crash on his couch, in return coaxing him into keeping his apartment clean. JB, unaware that KG lives off of his parent’s money, eventually learns that KG isn't famous like he's pretending to be and that the two have matching birthmarks on their ass cheeks. No equals, a friendship is formed and they start their own band: Tenacious D.

When the two of them learn that the best rock stars all used the same guitar pick - the pick of destiny - that gives supernatural powers to those who use it and that has ties to Satan himself, they set out to steal the pick from the Rock N Roll History Museum where it rests on display...

Featuring cameos from Dave Grohl as Satan, Meat Loaf as JB's father, Ben Stiller as a Guitar Center employee, John C. Reilly as Sasquatch, Amy Poehler as a truck stop waitress, Fred Armisen as a security guard, Neil Hamburger and, of course, Dio as himself, Tenacious D In The Pick Of Destiny is just as ridiculous as it sounds but it’s also a whole lot of fun, especially if you have a love for heavy metal but don’t need to take it one hundred percent seriously one hundred percent of the time. Yeah, it’s dumb stoner humor but it’s dumb stoner humor done well and with a sense of bizarre creativity and a genuine love for metal and it’s hard not to be entertained by all of this.

As fun as the cameos and guest stars are, however, this is Black and Gass’ show pretty much all the way. They really throw themselves into the roles, especially Black, and their obvious enthusiasm for the material is infectious. The movie does run a little longer than it probably needs to and not every joke lands as well as the next but overall this is a really fun watch.

Tenacious D In The Pick Of Destiny – Blu-ray Review:

Tenacious D In The Pick Of Destiny arrives on Region A locked 50GB Blu-ray from Shout! Factory in an AVC encoded 1080p high definition transfer framed at 1.85.1 widescreen and it looks quite good. There’s some solid detail in the image and colors look excellent. Black levels are strong and skin tones look natural enough. Depth and texture take advantage of the format and look quite good, while the image is free of any obvious compression problems.

Audio options are provided in 24-bit DTS-HD 2.0 Stereo and 5.1 Surround Sound options, in English, with optional subtitles available in English only. No complaints about the sound quality here, the 5.1 mix is a good one, using rear channels effectively throughout and delivering some pretty strong bass response. Dialogue remains clear throughout, the track is free of any hiss or distortion and the soundtrack has a lot of kick to it.

Extras are carried over from the DVD release, starting with a really fun audio commentary with stars Jack Black and Kyle Gass that goes over the origins of the Tenacious D project, ideas for the movie, getting the guest stars on board and lots more. A second audio commentary features Director Liam Lynch and covers working with Gass and Black, bringing the story to life, specific memories of shooting key scenes and other details related to the production’s history.

Up next is a selection of Deleted/Extended Scenes, running fifty-four minutes, with an intro from Lynch. There’s some funny material in here including bits at the Army Surplus store, road trip dialogue sequences, hallucinatory moments, car chase bits, some bits with Neil Hamburger and lots more.

The ‘Hell O’Clock News’ section contains thirty-four minutes of clips originally released online hosted by Asemodeus Lucifuge, Joyce Leviathan and Dennis Boogen that explore the history of the band and which serve as promotional spots for the movie. These are pretty amusing and worth checking out.

Recording The Rock spends twenty-one minutes documenting what went into creating the songs featured in the movie and the recording sessions that were needed to create them. Ronnie James Dio himself shows up in this, which makes it pretty fun.

The Orchestra And The Choir is a seven minute piece that looks at the creation of the orchestral music that was used in the feature while the thirteen minute 'Tenacious D Home Movies' bit is a look behind the scenes that focuses on Black and Gass' shenanigans.

Finishing up the extras are a music video for the song 'POD,' a five minute behind the scenes clip that shows off the making of that video, a teaser trailer, a theatrical trailer, menus and chapter selection options.

Tenacious D In The Pick Of Destiny - The Final Word:

Tenacious D In The Pick Of Destiny is seriously goofy entertainment but entertainment it is thanks to some obvious and genuine love for metal and some really committed performances from the two leads. Shout! Factory’s Blu-ray debut for the movie looks and sounds really strong and it carries over all of the extras from previous DVD editions, making this one worth it for fans of the film.

      Tormented – Movie Review:

The late Bert I. Gordon’s 1963 horror film, ‘Tormented,’ is an effectively spooky ghost story made with an obviously low budget but no less effective for it.
