Rollerbabies / Mount Of Venus – Movie Review:

Vinegar Syndrome pairs up a twosome of vintage smut directed in the mid-seventies by the late, great Carter Stevens.

    Rollerbabies:
    Review by Todd Jordan

In the future, the population got to critical mass, so the government made sex illegal. A person needed permission to procreate and everyone took some sort of anti-aphrodisiac to keep the libidos down. Masturbation became the only way to get off and pornography became the main form of entertainment. We learn all this from one Fuller Shite, director of WSEX-TV, which features Sherman Forbish's program “The Fuck and Suck Show,” who lays it all down in an informative monologue at the beginning. He pops up here and there throughout the movie. Sherman Forbish (Alan Marlow) learns his program, which is a live sex show, is in jeopardy and so looks for another moneymaking venture.

He finds it courtesy of a scientist he knows: sex androids. Feels like the real thing, doesn't break the law “he'll be rich.” Well, turns out the androids will cost six million bucks a piece, and who wants to pay that to get laid? So that's a bust. In the meantime he meets (and meats) a double agent, Miss Vice Squad (Susan McBain) and she helps get rid of the CIA whom are trying to bust him for illegal sex activities. And just how does she do that? By enlisting the help of the exotic looking runway model Yolanda Savalas (named Alice Kojak, because she's got a shaved head) and fucking the bejesus out of the agent. Finally Forbish gets an idea for a new fad, sex on roller skates as a competitive sport. Finally the movie title makes sense…sort of.

Plainly put, Rollerbabies is fantastic. Anyone who calls themselves a fan of exploitation movies from the grindhouse days who does NOT own this movie should rethink their claim. This flick is so packed with visual awesomeness that it simply has to be required viewing. Look for such greatness as an ice cream blowjob, telekinetic oral sex (a mindjob…years before Cronenberg made Scanners or Videodrome…maybe he saw this movie), a mad scientist on roller skates, sex on roller skates, and some weird angles. Oh and a piece of 70s style living room paneling that acts as a Star Trek-like sliding door (swoosh!). The music is funky and indicative of the era, and listen carefully for the theme from Debbie Does Dallas, made two years after this movie. Interesting, no? Despite the fact that no roller babies appear in the movie until the last ten minutes, the movie delivers the goods from start to finish and is easily the creme de la creme in this set. It's just a fun movie. You could take the hardcore portions out and it would still be a fun watch, but why would you want to do that?

    Mount Of Venus:

The most unusual film in this set is Mount Of Venus, an odd picture that starts off up at the top of Mount Venus where Jupiter (Jamie Gillis) wakes up from his nap atop a cloud to see two Greek goddesses, Venus (Georgina Spelvin) and her friend Juno, wrapped in a sixty-nine. Jupiter tells them that he thinks they should have an orgy but unfortunately Juno has run out of goodies. Jupiter tries to summon some goodies but it doesn't work. The girls explain to him that this is because they don't have any worshippers anymore in this technological day and age of the telephone. As such, they're not getting the schwag that they once had lavished upon them. Not happy with this turn of events, they decide to do something about it.

The gods spy in on a woman masturbating and Jupiter decides to 'supply a little golden rain' as he pisses down on earth off of the clouds, and then he appears in her room. She tells him that the golden rain was okay, but that she's looking for something else. Jupiter, unaware that she's talking about something completely different, tells her he's the god of thunder and lightning but she's not all that impressed. She decides to introduce her to Angelica (Rita Davis), her roommate, and then splits for work. Left to their own devices, Angelica and Jupiter get it on while Venus and Juno watch from above but soon they realize that he needs their help. Bacchus shows up after Jupiter pops back to the mountain, and they discuss their orgy plans some more, but back down on earth the girls miss Jupiter already.

The rest of the film is basically the gods meddling in the sex lives of mortals hoping to gather up some new followers. Jupiter's efforts get him in to bed a lot but don't seem to have much luck in increasing the ranks of their worshippers. The girls pitch in and do their part and eventually, through some clever thinking and hard work (!) they manage to get the orgy they've been after all this time.

Shot on a shoestring budget with Stevens' loft covered in cotton standing in for Mount Venus, this is about as minimalist as a film dealing with Greek Gods can get, but Stevens manages to make it work thanks to some solid comedic performances and some clever writing. Gillis in particular shows really good comedic timing here, as he has in other films, going so far as to (presumably) improvise in a few spots - a prime example being when he gets up from his nap in the clouds, pulls a piece of cotton off of his toga and mutters 'sure is cloudy here today.' All involved seem to be having a really good time working on the film and the whole thing has a quirky, friendly atmosphere to it that really helps to make it a lot more entertaining than it probably would have been otherwise. The sex is well shot, leaving little to the imagination but again, even during the hot and heavy bump and grind sessions there's a good sense of humor about the film that gives it, dare I saw, a lot of charm.

Rollerbabies / Mount Of Venus – Blu-ray Review:

Rollerbabies / Mount Of Venus come to region free Blu-ray “newly scanned & restored in 2k from their original 35mm negatives” with Rollerbabies framed at 1.85.1 widescreen and Mount Of Venus framed at 1.33.1. Both features are presented in AVC encoded 1080p high definition and share the same 50GB disc. Like most of the studio’s restorations, the transfers here look excellent. Although there is some spotting noticeable on Rollerbabies, both movies look much cleaner, brighter and better detailed than they have in the past on the different DVD editions that came out via Alpha Blue Archives and After Hours Cinema. The pictures have great color reproduction as well as strong depth and detail. Compression artifacts aren’t a problem and there are no issues with noise reduction or edge enhancement. Natural film grain is noticeable throughout but there’s very little actual print damage here at all, the pictures are nice and clean in that regard. Both movies look really good.

Audio options for both features are handled by 24-bit DTS-HD 2.0 tracks. Optional subtitles are offered for both films in English only. Audio quality is fine, with the dialogue always easy to follow and understand and the levels properly balanced throughout. There is some occasional sibilance and the odd pop here and there but overall, they sound pretty solid.

Extras are limited to a theatrical trailer for Rollerbabies, menus and chapter selection options. If purchased through the Vinegar Syndrome website, the first 3,000 copies of the release will come with a nice limited edition embossed slipcover designed by Earl Kessler, Jr. This release also comes with some great reversible cover sleeve art.

Rollerbabies / Mount Of Venus - The Final Word:

Rollerbabies / Mount Of Venus are both a whole lot of fun, very playful and enjoyable vintage adult pictures made with a strong cast and an eye towards goofy humor. The Peekarama Double Feature Blu-ray release is light on extras but it does look and sound much better than any other versions that we’ve seen before by quite a noticeable margin, making it easy to recommend to anyone with an interest in Carter Stevens’ work or seventies smut in general.
