Dirty Mind Of Young Sally/Teenage Bride – Movie Reviews:
Two Harry Novak productions on the same disc from Something Weird Video, both starring sultry redheaded sexpot Sharon Kelly (or, if you prefer, Colleen Brennan)? You know it! This double feature release of The Dirty Mind Of Young Sally and Teenage Bride is a goldmine of good times and an essential addition to any self-respecting exploitation/sexploitation buff’s home video library.
The Dirty Mind Of Young Sally (1973):
The first feature on the disc, directed by the mysterious Bethel Buckalew, was the film that introduced the world to a former dancer named Sharon Kelly – sex films would never be the same. In her big screen debut, Kelly plays ‘Dirty’ Sally McGuire, a buxom redhead who holds a day job as an office worker but who moonlights as a pirate radio DJ. With some help from her driver and technical guru, Toby (George ‘Buck’ Flower), Sally’s show gets all the local listeners of her station, KLUV, in the mood for love.
As Sally and Toby drive around and broadcast from secret locations to avoid the local police, her broadcasts become increasingly hotter and eventually she holds a contest in which the winner gets a chance to romp around in the buff with her. Those cops, however, are closing in and will take her off the air if she doesn’t do something about it – and so she shall!
While this one isn’t particularly plot heavy, it moves at a good pace and offers up ample opportunity for Kelly to heat up the screen. With curves in all the right places she’s certainly not bashful and whether it’s alone in front of the microphone or in cahoots with Buck Flower Kelly offers up sex appeal galore. The film has a good sense of humor about it and never tries to take itself too seriously. With plenty of comic relief offered up by the two bumbling cops (and some bizarre and obviously completely intentional homoeroticism thrown in for good measure). If that weren’t enough, a few subplots involving some randy beach bums and a guy trying to coerce his girlfriend into spreading for him add some humor and the movie even throws in a cat fight just for good measure.
Featuring an amusing theme song, The Dirty Mind Of Young Sally isn’t the best performance Kelly would ever give, but it sure is a lot of good sexy fun and a sure sign of things to come and her chemistry with Flower is, for lack of a better word, kind of cute. You want enthusiasm and free spirited nudity? You’ve got it!
Teenage Bride (1975):
This second feature was directed by Gary Troy pairs Kelly up with fellow redheaded hottie Cyndee Summers. The movie follows a chubby sleazeball named Charlie Elkins (Don Summerfield) who somehow managed to make a beautiful woman named Sandy (played by Summers) his unlucky wife. Charlie just isn’t happy with the way his marriage has turned out, however, and is far more interested in hanging out with the gorgeous next door neighbor, Marie (played by Kelly), a charming woman with a serious aversion to clothing of any kind.
Sandy isn’t one to waste an opportunity, however, and before you know it she’s hopped into bed with Charlie’s brother, Dennis (Ron Presson), a much younger and better looking man than her husband. Charlie gets wind of what’s going on and hires a private detective (one Elmer Klump, supposedly!) to catch his cheating wife in the act so he can divorce her, but it’s not going to be that easy for Charlie or anyone else for that matter.
Not quite as playful as the first film on the disc, Teenage Bride doesn’t really feature a teenage bride at all (Cyndee Summers is very attractive but is in no way, shape or form a teenager in this picture) but that doesn’t take away from what it does offer – lots of screen time for both Kelly and Summers. The sex scenes here get pretty steamy and come surprisingly close to hardcore in spots (though they do stop just shy of crossing that line) and leave very little to the imagination – a quality sure to please fans of both actresses but which comes back to bit the film once Don Summerfield disrobes.
The film’s more melodramatic aspects don’t always work perfectly and the story obviously comes second to the skin, but Teenage Bride definitely a good bit of bang for your buck. If the copious copulation isn’t enough to keep your attention then be on the lookout for an odd cast of bit part players highlighted by bizarre hippy guy who finds absolutely everything to be far out. The dialogue runs the gamut from naïve to deliciously venomous. The score is also worth mentioning, as is the camerawork, both are a fair bit better than average by the standards of the low budget sexploitation genre.
Dirty Mind Of Young Sally/Teenage Bride – DVD Review:
Both of the films were shot fullframe which is how they are presented here. Not exactly made under the most ideal shooting conditions, some of the lighting is a little off in more than a couple of spots, but overall, both of these movies look quite nice. The stark color photography holds up quite well and there is only really mild print damage to complain about (and I feel like a jerk complaining about it - these are almost forty year old low budget sexploitation films - taking their roots into account, these movies look great on this DVD!).
Dolby Digital Mono is the order of the day on all three films. While these are hardly going to shake the foundation of your home, these tracks are clear and audible. Sound effects are minimal and don't play a big role in either of the films. Everything is easy to understand and there aren't really any problems with these basic but sufficient tracks despite some mild hiss here and there. Dialogue is always easy to follow and both scores sound pretty decent.
This isn’t the most feature laden collection of supplements ever put together by Something Weird Video but there are some cool extras here starting with a short film called Bad Girl In Black Boots (9:53). There isn’t much to this, the title more or less says it all – it’s basically ten minutes worth of a foxy dark haired lady showing off her figure as she undresses in front of the camera. By the time she’s finished, she’s buck naked except for her knee high black boots. Some wonky narration courtesy of an unidentified male voice adds a certain something to this.
Rounding out the extra features once again is the Harry Novak Gallery Of Exploitation Art with Soundtrack Greatest Hits that plays out as a slideshow set to music. Many will be familiar with this from other Novak releases, but those who haven’t checked it out yet should get a kick out of it as there is some very cool imagery and advertising art in here. SWV has also included trailers for both features and for a half dozen other sexploitation pictures. Static menus and chapters stops round out the disc.
Dirty Mind Of Young Sally/Teenage Bride – The Final Word:
An essential release for both Ms. Kelly’s fan base and those with an interest in Harry Novak’s many fine productions, The Dirty Mind Of Young Sally/Teenage Bride offers up two veritable classics of seventies sexploitation with some decent extra features and in fine quality.
