Cult 70s Porno Director: Ray Dennis Steckler - Movie Review:

Who knew that roller-skaters got so much poon? Directed under the rather innocuous pseudonym of Cindy Lou Sutters, these three films deliver exactly the kind of erotica you'd expect from the mind of Ray Dennis Steckler - goofy and filled with roller-skating! Well, maybe you wouldn't necessarily expect them to be filled with roller-skating, but they are. How does the erotic cinema of the man who gave us Rat Pfink A Boo Boo and The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living And Became Mixed Up Zombies hold up? Well...

    Indian Lady (1977, 70 Minutes):

Our first film features the lovely and talented Debbie Truelove starring as a sexy maiden on roller-skates who cruises around Las Vegas peeking into windows and watching people have sex. It's pretty rad. As she skates around and plays voyeur, she tells us, through some mind-numbingly bad narration, of how she feels and what's going on in her head at the time. It all gives a really, really basic context to what is essentially a movie about a girl on roller-skates playing peeping tom.

Her first discovery occurs when she stops by her girlfriend's house and finds a girl in an Indian headdress and a red Miller Lite t-shirt giving a guy in a cowboy hat a blowjob. A guy in the corner of the room takes pictures and at one point the gal sucks on a pistol. From there Debbie heads on inside and joins her friend as the double team some other guy, only this time the cowboy is the one taking pictures.

Debbie moves along to another friend's house where she watches a girl give her boyfriend head, breaking to read porno magazines together. Debbie's into this as she plays with her boobs and licks her lips a lot. From there she moves on to another house where she finds an orgy going on, again, she watches through the window. Once that's over with it's on to house number four where she watches more blowjob action, telling us how sexy it all is. From there she watches a few more suburban encounters before heading off to a hotel where she watches some people have sex.

After eating some of the left over cum, Debbie moves on to a rundown theater where she watches old black and white stag reels and masturbates. After that it's back into the suburbs for more voyeuristic fun, this time spying on two cute lesbians going at it in a bedroom. When Debbie arrives at the last house she joins in on the action and she bangs a cute blonde and a weird looking old guy who is obviously in need of some Viagra, leaving her roller-skates on the entire time.

    Sex Rink (1976, 72 Minutes):

The legendary Rhonda Jo Petty (of countless adult films including Memphis Cat House Blues and Little Orphan Dusty) shows up in this one, made in 1976 and filmed almost completely inside a roller rink somewhere in Las Vegas. The premise for this one is about as simple as it gets. A gang of teens, most of whom look to be in their thirties, head off to go roller skating. The 'grown ups' who accompany them as chaperones are kind of hard assed and don't want them to co-mingle too much, so the randy teens hog tie them so that they can be left to their own devices. And what might those devices be? Roller-rink disco sex, of course! The rest of the movie is more or less non-stop sex, and there's really not a whole lot more to it story-wise at all.

Everyone skates around with striped socks on to their knees, never bothering to take their roller-skates off when it's time to get down and dirty - that would only slow down the action and completely eliminate the roller-skate fetish that apparently Steckler was afflicted with during this time period.

An interesting thing about this film, aside from some goofy sex and a lot of girls with skates on, is that there's really no live sound. Everything is narrated by some third party that tells us more or less everything we need to know as the set up for the sex. There are a few funny Steckler style touches in the casting, mostly the men, who look to have been recruited off of some crummy Vegas street corner, and watch during a couple of scenes as character lose clothes only to regain them in the next scene for no obvious reason, and then only to lose them again in the next one. Plenty of wonky disco/seventies dance music plays over top of the action, giving it all a very odd tone that tends to lean more towards the comedic than the erotic, though that is likely an accidental quality as it is all played very straight.

The roller-rink itself looks like it was built in a church basement or something. It isn't very big and it's lit in such a way that it's more or less all black except where the skaters happen to be at any given point in the movie, likely an attempt to make it look larger than it actually is. There are also a lot of red couches and other pieces of swanky furniture littered around the location where the movie was shot that looks like it would be more at home in someone's living room than in a disco. That doesn't stop a guy with John Holmes hair from laying back and getting head from a cute little roller-girl amidst a pile of mutli-colored balloons, however. It's just that kind of movie.

Another stand out moment in the film finds out 'teens' all skating together out on the dance floor completely naked and getting down to the funky sounds that pump out over the soundtrack. Everyone looks so wonderfully hairy and haggard that it all seems very surreal and strange - you just don't see stuff like this in modern smut films for some reason, and honestly, that is a damn shame.

    Plato's Retreat West (1979, 60 Minutes):

Interestingly enough, this movie stars a girl credited only as 'Big Tits Malloy' which, in all actuality, automatically makes it cool.

At any rate, this film follows a 'teenage roller-skater' named Sandy Sunshine who quits her day job to go work at the swingingest sex club around, the titular Plato's Retreat West in sunny California. When Sandy arrives at her new place of employment, she's ushered into a secret world of orgies that take place in various locations throughout the set up, and she's only too happy to get down and dirty in each and every one of them because, shock of all shocks, Sandy is a bit of a nymphomaniac. Go figure.

At any rate, there are a few stand out moments in this film, some of which are group events or bondage/mild S&M oriented in nature, while others are simply just odd. We do get to watch the woman who one can only assume is the mysterious 'Big Tits Malloy' in the shower, playing with her gigantic fun bags for the camera and taking her sweet time drying off. There's some serious roller-skating sex in here as well, as Sandy gets involved in a hot and heavy session with one of the male patrons of the sex club she now calls home. She takes him on the stair case, which is covered in some sickly looking orange carpet, eventually winding up in a sixty-nine with him, never stopping to take off her trademark roller-skates as we now know is the norm in these three films. A few of the girls sport some interesting fetish wear in the movie, from a brassiere made out of chains to a leather booby holder/dog collar combination that is perfectly complimented by the leather whip that the doll has adorned herself with.

While this film is slightly more serious in nature than the first two, it's still completely campy thanks to the delirious dialogue which provides no small amount of unintentional hilarity. The sex is slightly kinkier than in the two movies that proceed it on this disc, but only marginally so - this is still fun, goofy, campy stuff and it's completely and utterly enjoyable as long as you know what you're getting into ahead of time and don't go in expecting anything that even remotely resembles a serious erotic movie - this is Ray Dennis Steckler we're talking about after all.

Cult 70s Porno Director: Ray Dennis Steckler - DVD Review:

All three films on this DVD are presented fullframe, as most readers probably expected. We can make a reasonable assumption based on how things look that fullframe is the intended aspect ratio for both of the film on this disc. Compositions on both films seem to be okay, and they've been taken from what appear to be tape sources. The images are scratched and beaten up but watchable.

Of the three movies, Sex Rink looks the best in terms of color reproduction and clarity but all three movies are perfectly watchable even if at times they're fairly soft and lack the detail that a true film to DVD transfer can provide. Indian Lady also looks pretty decent as most of it takes place in natural light and during the day, where as in the two other film a couple of the darker scenes look a little on the smudgey side. Plato's Retreat West is on par with the other two films - it's not perfect but it'll do when you take into account the low budget origins of the movies.

For the three features on the disc, it's mono all the way. While the quality isn't mind blowing, everything is audible but be prepared to turn the volume up a bit as the levels are lower than normal. The funky score and wonderfully inept dialogue comes through just fine, however and while this isn't a remarkable set of mixes, they get the job done well enough.

Well, considering there are three features on here it's probably not worth complaining about, but this release is completely barebones aside from the menu screen. It's a shame that there aren't any trailers here for any of the three films but who knows if they even still exist.

Cult 70s Porno Director: Ray Dennis Steckler - The Final Word:

All three of the films in this set are so completely horrible that they transcend what seventies porn is and stand alone as exemplary examples of 'what the fuck' cinema. Those who appreciate the movies of Ray Dennis Steckler for what they are, rather than what they aren't, ought to enjoy this trilogy of roller-skate oriented smut as despite the fact that they're more or less plot-less, they're still a lot of fun.
