    The Movie:

    With thirteen tracks recorded live between 1992 and 1994 at six different venues, Alive In The Nineties gives a decent overview of the Meat Puppets from the later part of their career. Probably best known for their appearance on Nirvana's Unplugged performance on MTV, the band had been around since 1980, much longer than most realized. Their 1994 album Too High To Die produced their most popular single, Backwater and it's included here as well as a nice selection of some of their earlier material as well.

    Audio and video quality on this release is a mixed bag. A lot of the footage was shot using a camcorder in a very nonchalant manner - it looks like a home movie, and in a sense it is. Some of the footage is quite dark and there are definite instances where the poor video sources used to compile this collection show their weaker aspects. The audio fares slightly better. The 5.1 remastering this time does add quite a bit of realistic depth to the performances that is lacking on the 2.0 track, though at times it is still a bit muffled sounding.

    Thankfully, there is a nice assortment of extra features included on the disc. First up is the full-length video for 'We Don't Exist' as well as a decent slideshow, but the best bonus feature is a seven-minute interview with Curt Kirkwood from the late 80s. There is also a feature called Derrick Bostrom's Anecdotes, which is exactly what it sounds like. It's pretty amusing, and it's essentially seven minutes of the drummer talking about the main footage used on the release. The Big Bottom Summit is footage of Cris Kirkwood, Flea, and Mike Watt discussing instruments and also features clips with Thurston Moore as well. Finally, there is video footage of the band covering Good Golly Miss Molly from a performance in Omaha, Nebraska.
