This month's comic starts off with a tale called “Desert Pirates: A Story of Evil Haggery”, and the Sea Hag is back at it again, scheming to get the best of that blasted Popeye. And by the best, we mean she aims once again to kill him. Using Wimpy's bottomless stomach and never ending gluttony, she tricks the fat man into captivity. With such a valuable member of Popeye's gang as ransom, she's sure to get Popeye to fall right into her trap. But Wimpy actually does the old sailor a solid, and tells him exactly what that trap is, since Wimpy is part of it. A little spinach and a punch later and that old bag is in orbit. My gorsh!

“Danger, Lunch!” puts Swee'Pea at odds with his dad for hitting him in the head with a hammer, as it went through the wall while he was trying to hammer in a nail on the other side. Swee'Pea is going through a phase of exploration, trying to craft things with his little baby hands. When carpentry becomes too noisy, he switches over to chemistry. But when he makes the spinach pie smell like a rancid fart Popeye puts the kibosh on that too. That kid is cock-blocking Popeye and Olive big time, so they run off to “picnic” in the woods to get away from his unintentionally getting in the way. But he finds them, on accident, and brings a wasp nest with him. Oh Swee'Pea!

Axle and Cam return for another foolish robot tale, and Cam continues his quest to be more like a human kid than a robot one. He sees a TV show where a little kid has a beanie with a propeller on it. Thinking that meant the boy could fly, he decides to fashion a propeller of his own so he can be like the kid on the telly. Once he finishes his project, a uranium eating dragon (that can talk) emerges from the ocean to destroy the cozy, coastal robot town. The robots fear not the trouble salt can reek on metal. Anyway, Cam makes quick work of the beast, only to get scolded afterward for not picking up after himself. Oh Cam!

It's the usual silly little book Yoe puts out issue after issue, but it's consistently fun. It's more fun though if you can look beneath the surface of these stories, as there're all sorts of things to snicker at. Could be some political incorrectness, or things Sagendorf has a baby doing, or just the corniness of 1950's kids comics. As always, Popeye comics deliver on the fun factor, one way or another. Well, other than Axle and Cam stories. Their departure cannot come soon enough. It will be nice when Bud swaps them out with some other third banana tale. And one other thing: this issue has an AWESOME variant cover by Steve Mannion, one where Olive Oyl actually looks sexy. If only we had a review image to share.
