Fabian Gray stars in part one of the newest Five Ghosts story arc “Monsters & Men” and the man finds himself in Romania in the company of a good number of nasty monsters looking for dinner. Why is he in Romania? His friend Sebastian was abducted at the end of the last arc and Fabian has followed the trail to Romania using his Sherlock Holmes power. And he's probably looking for some answers too, as his most recent adventure brought out his most feared talent (issue #12), that of being possessed by the literary character of Dracula. You just know this is going to lead to some bad trouble.

After saving a boy in the woods, he ends up at doctor's house in an afflicted village and staying the night, and the doctor gives him a lot of information about The Demon's Seal, once Fabian shows him a drawn symbol left for him at the scene of his friend's abduction. He warns Fabian not to go near the house on the hill where all the monsters seem to have originated from. Poo-poo to that if Sebastian is in there, but Fabian says he'll heed to warning. A little shut-eye and some nightmares are in the cards for Fabian, and Dracula pays him a visit in the dream world. But in the conscious world, a mysterious visitor also pays him a visit.

Over in another part of the story, sick people get some help from a very bizarre being, looking like a mechanical magpie in a hat and trench coat. He/she/it dispenses medicine to all who need it and he's very pleased with the results when they all start drinking the medicine like ravenous dogs. Who is this savior of mankind? We don't know yet.

Once again the team of Barbiere and Mooneyham has put out yet another visually impressive story with a narrative that flows at a quick pace but not too quick. There's plenty of time for exposition to paint the beginnings of the new plot and this is a great time for new readers to jump on board this excellent book. It's adventure with elements of horror and the supernatural, and with a great character in Fabian Gray. He's got a lot of demons (not to mention ghosts) and a lot of baggage to get himself through. His missing sister is still to be saved, but it doesn't look like that's going to have much of the focus in this arc. It would actually be good to keep that piece of it out for a few issues. A straight up horror story (which is what this issue pretty well is) would be a welcome story indeed. But anything Barbiere dishes out in his scripts will work with this reader. This is simply comic book enjoyment that should not be skipped over.
