Cal McDonald's shit life has gotten shittier. Not only does he fight monsters, but now he has to learn to live as one. Since dying and turning into a ghoul, and one with huge wings, Cal has fallen deeper and deeper into darkness with fits of rage and outbursts towards his friends and allies. Mo'lock and Adam (Frankenstein's monster) are trying to be understanding, but they are very worried for the newly changed friend. But right now, they have to worry about an attack on a hospital, where a butt load of monsters are preparing to eat the patients and staff.

In other matters, thee two demon babies from last issue have found their own friend in the recently defeated bad guy named Hemlock. He can lead the demons to the Third Child they are looking for, as they turn people into mindless cannibalistic maniacs looking for themselves, but for what reason he wants to help isn't entirely clear as yet. Hemlock of course has some business to take care of with Cal, but he also has some punishment to deal out to a police detective ally of Cal's and the husband to Hemlock's one-time girlfriend. His actions against the cop and his family are grim to say the least and after what he does he expects the law officer to help him. With what, we don't know.

Meanwhile Cal has a conversation with his dead and buried father, and in the flesh; Mo'lock and Adam get an ultimatum of sorts; and monsters of all types are banding together for a greater cause. Seems the uglies are getting fed up with the supernatural destroyer's ways and will work with one another to take care of the problem.

Steve Niles works with the artist from the last Criminal Macabre mini-series, “Eyes of Frankenstein”: a fellow named Christopher Mitten. Mitten maintains the same quality of work as in the former series, and his uniquely dark style fits in perfect with the subject matter Niles writes down. The story is violent, filled with monsters and evil, and such a great read from start to finish it warrants a second read right away. Cal McDonald is a terrific character and Niles keeps transforming him, quite literally, keeping his character in a constant state of upheaval and unrest. It'll be interesting where this story leaves us at the end in regards to his condition, and hopefully the next series makes that the sole focus. Criminal Macabre is great stuff that comes highly recommended.
