  • Rogue Trooper Classics #3

    Published by: IDW Publishing
    Released on: July 2, 2014

The four stories included in this edition of classic issue reprints keep Rogue on Nu-Earth, detailing his adventures that sideline him from his grand mission - to discover who sold out the Rogue Troopers and bring them to justice.

    [SPOILERS]

Part 2 of The Rookies picks up where the previous collection left off - with the two remaining Sout'er soldiers getting rescued by Rogue. The older one, named Kransky, recognizes Rogue as a traitor and wanted for questioning the death of all the Sout'er generals when that satellite went down earlier. The other surviving soldier, a young rookie, isn't buying that so Kransky takes both their rifles and forces them to march in front of him, singing so he'll know where they're at. But Rogue uses his helmet-chip to surprise Kransky and knock him out just as a Nort patrol sweeps in on them. The rookie is hesitant but, at Rogue's urging, is able to fight back and soon they're all safe. Kransky, though, has come to and is going to just shoot Rogue on the spot. The rookie refuses to let this happen and, in the showdown, has to shoot Kransky dead. He's shaken but, as Rogue tells him, war changes people in a variety of ways…

The next story is titled Blue Moon, the site of the Sout'er research that produced G.I.'s like Rogue. After dastardly defeating valiant Sout'er troops a Nort battalion sets up their safety dome and, in recognition of their achievement, are given some entertainment: An acrobatic comedy troop of blue mooners, like Rogue but much smaller in stature and not trained as lethal soldiers. Rogue has been observing all this activity and wants to put these Nort'ers out of business so he sets up his bio-chipped gear tactically and then sneaks inside as another of the blue mooners. When his gear mistakenly hits a Nort'er truck rather than the tent itself, Rogue has the blue mooners help him up to the top of the tent where he can vent in the toxic Nu-Earth atmosphere and kill all the Nort'ers. The blue mooners are thankful, offering to leave him with some parting jokes as a gift, but Rogue has his own comedy trio - his gear, who hit him up with some truly awful jokes until he reminds them that the biggest joke of all is the war itself.

In Poison, a big explosion (of a Nort'er vehicle, thanks to Rogue) melts some of the permafrost surrounding Rogue in the ice-capped wilderness he's now in. In that melted section, he sees a new life form actually growing and it gives him some hope. But, soon enough, Helm alerts him that Nort'er troops are closing. But as he starts to run Rogue passes out completely, leaving his gear scattered around him, wondering what happened. They all figure out it must be a poison in that new plant, one he was never immunized against. The situation's looking grim as Nort ski troops close in, seeing him vulnerable and video-ing it. Rogue's bio-chipped equipment think fast and, cranking their volumes, are able to cause an avalanche that buries the Norts and they themselves. More Nort troops close in, scanning for his body, but Rogue is back on his feet and dispatches them all bare-handed. He locates his buried gear and agrees with their poison theory, thinking this knowledge died with those Nort troops. But, far away, images of the unconscious G.I. figure prominently on a Nort screen…

Fear of the Machines closes out this volume wherein Rogue finds what was supposed to be a city full of Sout'er troops instead full of corpses. A seemingly well-placed sniper is to blame and so they dispatch it quickly. But Rogue's not convinced one sniper could've caused all this damage so he goes in for a closer look, finding the old computer building that was running the town when the war started. He only finds the main computer but, after it attacks him, figures the Nort'ers set it up to spring every defense in town against any Sout'er troops. So if Rogue doesn't take care of it the same fate will await any other passing Sout'er troops. Pinned down by weapons fire Rogue spies a panel containing a peripheral unit, an “input link to the central processor of a computer.” He's able to here upload Helm and Bagman into it and they begin their “Fantastic Voyage” to the heart of the CPU, to try and shut it down.

But the computer has internal defenses as well, as they soon discover. It throws a variety of computer attacks at them, finally pinning them down with four “bioforms.” Meanwhile, outside, the computer system's gone mobile and is threatening to crush Rogue and Gunnar under its immense size. Out of ammo and out of options, is Rogue Trooper finally out of time?

Gerry Finley-Day handles all the writing duties here and it shows - clear & classic Rogue Trooper goodness. Dave Gibbons contributes his talents to the artwork, as do Colin Wilson and Mike Dorey. It's all consistent and richly detailed, looking quite stunning in these new reprints. And the action just keeps coming and coming in an impressive variety of storylines. Well worth snagging at any point.
