  • The Goon: One For the Road (One-Shot)

    Released by: Dark Horse Comics
    Released on: June 25, 2014

Hooray for a brand-new Goon story! Eric Powell returns with The Goon and Franky “helping” a wayward sailor looking for his missing buddy, trying to get them back to the docks before curfew.

    [SPOILERS FOR YA MUGS!]

After “three old bums in tunics” nearly Shanghai him in a truck, the sailor lands in front of Goon and Franky. He explains his plight, how those three tricked him into the truck, and that he needs to find his sailor buddy, Harvey. The sailor says he's from Georgia so that's what Franky calls him the rest of the issue as they set out to check every bar in town.

Of course, their method of investigation in each bar is to order a beer in each. Georgia doesn't think much of this, wanting just to find his friend and get back before they're in any trouble. Shortly, though, they encounter the three witches (it turns out) that were so deceptive to Georgia earlier. Here, they're trying to corrupt a young boy with smokes, booze and vandalism. They confront the three who makes the boy kick Franky in the shins and cover their escape. Fortunately, the Goon notes, there are a couple of orphanages on the way to their next bar…

There, Georgia finds some Marines and asks them if they've seen Harvey. This sets their sergeant off, who frightfully tells Georgia what it is he's seen. The other Marines pull him off, all deeply in shellshock. Georgia laments he'll never find his friend but the Goon tells him to cheer up, that there's one out-of-the-way country/western joint left to investigate.

At the Thirsty Saddle, a country crooner is twanging out a song about transexual love. As Franky goes to order beers Georgia shuts his mouth, demanding no more booze. Instead, then, he orders a sarsaparilla - which sets off a nearby cowboy, who's brother was killed by some fancy-duds-wearin', sarsaparilla-drinkin' no-good so-and-so. But before the cowboy can shoot Georgia down the Goon flattens him, incensing the all-cowboy crowd. A proper knock-down, drag-out ensues, with the crooner providing the soundtrack.

After the fracas, it's clear they're not going to find Harvey. But Franky directs them to one more place to give it a think - another bar, naturally, much to Georgia's consternation. As they take a seat at Norton's Pub, ready to drown their collective sorrows, in walks “Scarilyn Monroe,” followed by a host of other mock-celebrity personalities. When asked why they've all suddenly poured into the bar, they reply that they're running from the man-eating gorilla outside.

Just as Franky is about to express his doubt of such a thing, in crashes an enormous, kaiser-helmeted ape. The Charlton Heston knock-off rightfully declares, “My God! It eats people!” as it proceeds to do just that. “Arnold Shvartzunferger” is the only one to remain defiant, getting eaten by the ape for his troubles, declaring before he dies that his illegitimate children will get nothing and like it! A German bi-plane then appears, its pilots laughing as they declare their Aryan gorilla will eat them all.

But that's too much for the PTSD-suffering Marine sergeant, who shoots down the plane so that it crashes into the ape, killing all the bad guys instantly. After the insanity, the bartender asks Georgia if his name is Jack and, if so, he's got a note for him. It's from Harvey, telling him he made his way back to base already and that he should, too, so he's not in trouble. That's his breaking point so he gets on a bus headed to base. The Goon and Franky let him know to look them up if he's ever in town again, to which Jack responds that they are too much of a mess. The Goon agrees..in Franky's case that's the truth…

Few things in life are as fun to read through as Goon comics and this one-shot doesn't disappoint. Eric Powell's handle on the character makes each issue consistently a blast to read, nearly without fail. And here he gets to just let loose and have all the creative time he wants. A great introduction for newbies or another fun story for long-time fans here.
